Decent Documentary
Echoes of Titanic (1992)
** 1/2 (out of 4)
Decent U.K. documentary about the Titanic covers a wide range of subjects. At first we get the typical bio of the ship's sinking and then we cover a few different subjects. One includes an excellent sequence where we see newspaper articles from around the world. These here are most interesting the day after the sinking because they were all pretty much making up stories and it's pretty strange seeing so different stories being published. We also get archival interviews with survivors Edith Haisman and Eva Hart. Up next are some drawings of the event, which then lead into talk about various movies made on the subject. We start off with the first, 1912's SAVED FROM THE TITANIC but sadly the film is lost so we don't see any clips but we do get a few promotional photos. The original newsreel with Captain Smith is shown as are clips from the 1929 movie Atlantic. Finally, we get clips from A NIGHT TO REMEMBER. Several experts including Peter Boyd-Smith and John P. Eaton are interviewed throughout the 45-minute documentary. There's no question that this documentary is rather cheaply made and one certainly shouldn't walk into this expecting something like a National Geographic produced item. With that said, I think there's enough interesting material shown to make this worth sitting through and I really enjoyed seeing the various headlines and newspaper articles. While there are better documentaries out there, there's still enough interesting stuff here for fans or history buffs to enjoy.
