To my knowledge ,Marcel Pagnol's last film ,made for TV in 1967.It 's all done as a funny little fable, sort of like something left over from "Lettres de MOn Moulin" which the writer transfered to the screen thirteen years before;besides ,it is another Daudet's short story.

Actually it's mainly a Fernand Sardou's one man show ;the short has a running time of about 30 minutes ,and the thespian speaks for at least 27 minutes! In his tiny church, the vicar of Cucugnan delivers a sermon:he had visions last night;he saw the paradise and the purgatory and none of the late inhabitants of his small village were there .So he was taken for a tour in Hell where he met up with his former flock.

He depicts in lavish detail the tortures ,the fires, and the horrors of Hell.Did he have visions of the fiery furnace?Or did he tell this story to hear confessions again? For people did not confess anymore in Cucugnan.

Directing is static to a fault. But Sardou's performance is worth a watch.
