The Jeff Bridges Interview: The 'Crazy Heart' star talks music, marriage and mortality

11 December 2009 12:11 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Mention Jeff Bridges to almost anyone and they immediately can reference their favorite Bridges’ character, whether it’s the innocent alien in “Starman,” the burnt-out DJ in “The Fisher King,” the mediocre jazz musician in “The Fabulous Baker Boys,” the valiant president in “The Contender” or the now iconic Dude from “The Big Lebowski.”   With “Crazy Heart,” Bridges has added another unforgettable character to his remarkable 40-year career. In the film, out Dec. 16, he plays Bad Blake, a once-successful country singer who’s traveled thousands of miles down dark, bad roads. At the bottom of a downward slide, he drives from »

The Trailer for 'Crazy Heart' Starring Jeff Bridges

16 November 2009 9:25 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

The trailer for Jeff Bridges' drama Crazy Heart has arrived online, and you can check it out by clicking on the Trailer tab above. This film is garnering a lot of attention for Bridges, and Oscar buzz seems to be following in its wake.

Bridges has been nominated four-times for an Academy Award, but hasn't yet taken home a statue. He was nominated for The Contender (2000), Starman (1984), Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974) and The Last Picture Show (1971).

In Crazy Heart, Bridges stars as the richly comic, semi-tragic romantic anti-hero Bad Blake in the debut feature from writer-director Scott Cooper. Bad Blake is a broken-down, hard-living country music singer who’s had way too many marriages, far too many years on the road and one too many drinks way too many times. And yet, Bad can’t help but reach for salvation with the help of Jean (Golden Globe® Nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal »

Trailer, Poster, and Oscar Buzz for Crazy Heart Starring Jeff Bridges

16 November 2009 8:16 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Jeff Bridges is an actor who’s overdue for an Oscar.  He’s been nominated four times before (Best Supporting Actor for The Contender, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, and The Last Picture Show; Best Actor for Starman) and has a wealth of great performances in his filmography.  It looks like Bridges is adding another one to his filmography as he’s getting some serious Oscar-buzz for his performance as a hard-living country singer in Crazy Heart.

This is also good news for Fox Searchlight, which looked like they were going to be out of this year’s Oscar race after Amelia flopped.  Now a film which was on no one’s radar two months ago is being called The Wrestler of 2009.  You can get that sense from both the poster and trailer for the film but not in a “me too” kind of way.  I’m always up for Jeff Bridges »

Top Ten Movies About U.S. Politics

3 November 2009 9:45 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Life is political. Hollywood is political. And yesterday in the U.S., the state elections were very political in the broad sense of the term, since many pundits kept arguing that they served as a referendum on President Obama and his policies.

We make no such claims. We're not here to talk U.S. politics specifically, but with all this political fever in play, what better time than to reflect back on what we believe are the ten best movies about American  politics?

There are some terrific contenders here; not surprisingly some from decades gone by. But in most, the themes of power and corruption going hand-in-hand is front and center. It's material that's inherently rife with conflict, making for some of the best drama to be found anywhere.

So have a look at the following pages and our selections for the best movies about American politics. And when you're finished, »

Jeff Bridges: The Dude Who Stares At Goats

28 October 2009 9:01 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

November 6th will see the release of the much anticipated The Men Who Stare at Goats. The film about an army battalion of “psychic spies” stars four Hollywood’s heavyweights: George Clooney, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Spacey, and Ewan McGregor.

Although each actor is well-known and has been in stand-out movies–Spacey in American Beauty, Clooney in Ocean’s 11, and McGregor in Moulin Rouge–Bridges takes the cake for playing, arguably, one of the most memorable characters in cinema history.

Bridges has had a long acting career, getting his unofficial start as an infant in the 1950 melodrama The Company She Keeps. At nine years old, Bridges began working in television with small roles in various shows over the next several years.

His first major role came in 1971, at the age of 22, in the film The Last Picture Show. The coming of age flick was a stellar debut for Bridges, earning him »

These Five Fictional Presidential Addresses Could Give Barack Obama A Run For His Money

9 September 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Tonight, President Barack Obama will deliver a highly anticipated address on the matter of national health care reform. The speech, undoubtedly one of the most important of Obama's career, has been described by insiders as a "game-changer" regarding his position on health care. Still, while Obama is an indisputably gifted orator and his speech tonight is of paramount importance to the people of America, can he measure up to some other famous Presidential addresses -- particularly on the subjects of alien invasions and imminent, Gary Oldman-led terrorist attacks?

If these five fictional Presidential speeches are any indicator, President Obama has his work cut out for him when speaking to the nation tonight.

Air Force One: President James Marshall, played note-perfect by Harrison Ford, will not negotiate with terrorists. Instead, he'll systematically execute them in the midst of a mile-high plane hijacking. But Marshall's handiness with a firearm is second »

tMF Oscarwatch: Best Actress Losers - Ellen Burstyn ( Requiem for a Dream)

11 August 2009 12:09 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

If there is one particular actress that filmmaker Darren Oronofsky likes to cast, then it has to be Ellen Burstyn. In The Fountain, the director himself wrote into the script a role for the acclaimed actress. In Requiem for a Dream, Burstyn was nominated for a Best Actress award, and it was very unfortunate she did not win- her performance is way up there with the greats.

In the movie, Burstyn portrays Sara Goldfarb, an elderly widow who became addicted with weight-loss amphetamine pills, was hospitalized against her will, undergoes painful electro-convulsive therapy, and later on was confined at a mental asylum. For her performance, she won the Indie Spirit Award for Best Lead Female and more than 8 major critics' association awards for Best Actress. She also received nominations for Best Actress from the Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globes and the Oscars.

Cast found for Straw Dogs remake

16 July 2009 1:25 PM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

The legendary film director Sam Peckinpah was already known for his propencity to show audiences gore-filled action sequences by the time his film Straw Dogs was released in 1971. Peckinpah, known for his westerns like The Wild Bunch, never shyed away from depicting violence on-screen and the aftermath of its consequences. Even so, when Straw Dogs came out it created a media uproar over its controversial scene of rape and the descent of Dustin Hoffman's character from a timid husband to brutal killer.

Now Rod Lurie (The Contender) has set his sights on remaking Straw Dogs and has cast the film's three main roles. James Marsden is playing the Hoffman character, now envisioned as a Hollywood screenwriter who takes his would-be actress wife to live in the South so he can finish writing his latest screenplay. Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns) has been cast as Marsden's wife and Alexander Skarsgard (True »

Straw Dogs Remake Rounds Up Cast

16 July 2009 6:06 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Variety have named Kate Bosworth and Alexander Skarsgard, alongside the previously cast James Marsden, as the three key players in the Straw Dogs remake. Marsden will be playing a screenwriter relocating to Mississippi from La, Bosworth his wife who travelled to La La Land with aspirations to become an actress, and Skarsgard her high school boyfriend who sees her return home to Mississippi as a way to reignite his lost reputation in the town. When I heard that Straw Dogs is being remade, I wanted to hear that it would be handled by a director as unflinching and uncompromising as Sam Peckinpah, helmsman of the original (Chan Wook Park would have been ideal, for example). That it is Rod Lurie in charge, sometime film critic now best known for (occasionally polemical) political dramas like The Contender or TV's Commander In Chief, leaves me both weary and a little curious. The two join the previously cast James Marsden. 134 New Names Invited to Join the Academy

Yesterday came the yearly announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as it extended 134 invitations to several artists and executives "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" read the press release. Of course all of them can decline, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen as all who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy's roster of voting members. "These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks." The list follows below and reading around the best analysis I saw of it came from Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience who, among other things, pointed out the addition of longtime Darren Aronofsky's »

I love this film! The director, Mister Rod Lurie, emailed me about this movie last year, and I'm glad he did!

Kate Beckinsale is phenomenal as a Washington DC reporter who will do anything, even go to jail, to protect her source for an explosive story!

The directing is superb, and the payoff is satisfying! The plot twist in the end is unpredictable!

And speaking of Mister Rod, he's my inspiration! He was a former film critic who became a respected scriptwriter ("The Contender") and is now a multi-hyphenate (Producer, Actor, Writer, Director). Way to go Mister Rod, you're amazing :happy

So get "Nothing but the Truth" on DVD right now!

Top Ten: After Kate Winslet, Who?

4 March 2009 10:48 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Kate Winslet finally won her Oscar, delighting the bulk of fans who have been rooting for her since she dreamt of Hollywood in '94 -- 'they're desperately keen to sign me up!' -- or nearly drowned in '97. She never let go. So, who is next?

Or rather... who is most overdue?

Contrary to popular belief, it ain't easy to win an Oscar. It certainly wasn't easy for Kate the Great. You need more than an accent, a disability, a good or popular movie, old age makeup or mimicry skills. You also need star charisma, a role that compliments or complicates that charisma and media support. Above all else you need luck combined with surgically precise good timing. History is full of performers who never won the movie's top prize despite plentiful contributions to the art of acting.

For the following list I'm ignoring outstanding performers who have never »
