Storyline

Eleven-year-old Annie has been living in an orphanage her whole life run by cruel Miss Hannigan. After unsuccessful escape attempts, Grace Farrell comes to take the child home to live two weeks with billionaire Oliver Warbucks during Christmas. The plucky orphan worms her way into the hearts of the staff and Mr. Warbucks and even the president of the United States! Even though Mr. Warbucks wants to adopt her, she is still looking for her real parents who left a locket with her when they dropped her off at the orphanage. Miss Hannigan's brother and his sleazy girlfriend pose as Annie's parents to gather the reward that Warbucks has offered to Annie's real parents. Written by <ragheadchick@hotmail.com>

The magic is back! This version is the real deal.
7 November 1999 | by (Florida) – See all my reviews

(No, I'm not a Disney shill. This is being pre-empted by football in my area tonight so it was shown in the afternoon.)

For those who looked in vain to find the broken bones of the Broadway hit beneath the elephantine bulk of the movie version, the search is over. While there are some minor differences, this TV "Annie" is the real deal.

It's not only brimming over with wonderful songs and superb choreography, this movie is front-loaded with bona fide Broadway musical chops -- Rooster, Lily, Warbucks, and Annie. Kathy Bates is the surprise knockout of the production (doing her own singing -- who knew?). And Audra MacDonald is sweetly appealing as Grace. There's not a dog in the bunch.

Oops! I mis-spoke. Sandy also does a winning turn.

This "Annie" is bound to become an annual treat. One viewing will have you wanting to adopt this orphan and make her your own.
