Shown as part of the "Storyboard" series of individual plays, "Woodentop" became the pilot for the long-running series The Bill (1984). Although essentially the same, a few changes were made before the series began. These are:
The first line of dialogue in 'Woodentop', "Right then Carver, let's do it." is spoken by Jim Carver when he wakes up on his first morning as a PC. He uses the same line in 'The Bill' on the morning of his wedding to June Ackland, and again as he is walking away from June in his last episode.
When PC Carver (Mark Wingett) meets PC Morgan for the first time (later PC Edwards played by Colin Blumenau) he nervously introduces himself as 'Jim, Jim'. As a joke, PC Morgan calls him 'JimJim'. This little joke between the 2 characters is prevalent in The Bill (1984), though it is never revealed why he calls him 'JimJim' - only in the pilot 'Woodentop'.
The episode opens and closes with shots of Jim Carver's digital alarm clock: firstly when he wakes up at 04:45 for the start of his shift, and then secondly at 21:51, 17 hours later, when he gets into bed and turns out the light at the end of his shift.
