Mordecai Lawner, Actor Who Appeared in ‘Annie Hall,’ Dies at 86

Mordecai Lawner, a lifelong actor who appeared in Woody Allen’s “Annie Hall,” died of heart failure at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City on Thanksgiving. He was 86.

In Allen’s 1977 hit “Annie Hall,” Lawner played the father of Allen’s character Alvy Singer. In a flashback to Singer’s childhood living under the Coney Island Cyclone roller coaster, Lawner can be seen admonishing his wife for firing the cleaning woman.

“She has no money!” he proclaimed. “She’s got a right to steal from us! After all, who is she gonna steal from if not us?”

His other movie credits include “Ghostbusters II” and “A Fish in the Bathtub.”

Lawner was a regular on and Off Broadway. On Broadway in 1995, he played Stanley in “Death of a Salesman” in George C. Scott’s Circle in the Square production.

'The First Phone Call from Heaven' Finds a Home at Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. has acquired the Mitch Albom novel The First Phone Call From Heaven, which was published in November by Harper. The story follows a group of residents in Coldwater, Michigan, who begin receiving phone calls from their loved ones in heaven. Take a look at the trailer for the book released last year, then read on for more information.

The story centers on Sully Harding, a single father and disgraced pilot who returns from prison to find his hometown captivated by this miraculous event, including his young son desperately hoping for a phone call from his late mother. Sully becomes determined to prove that this phenomena is really a hoax.

Denise Di Novi is attached to produce the adaptation for Warner Bros., although the studio has not found a screenwriter at this time.

Warner Bros. Dials Up Mitch Albom’s ‘First Phone Call from Heaven’

Warner Bros. is taking “The First Phone Call from Heaven,” buying movie rights to Mitch Albom’s inspirational novel.

The project has been set up with Warner-based Denise Dinovi and Alison Greenspan.

It’s the first feature film rights deal for Albom, who’s also written similar faith-based titles such as  “Tuesdays with Morrie,” “For One More day,” “Have a Little Faith” and “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” — all of which were made into TV movies.

“First Phone Call From Heaven” is set in a town on Lake Michigan that gets worldwide attention when its citizens start receiving phone calls from the afterlife and centered on a grief-stricken single father determined to find out if the calls are hoaxes.

Di Novi’s produced “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” “You’re Not You,” “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” and the upcoming Will Smith-Margot Robbie drama “Focus” for the studio. »

Exclusive: Warner Bros has acquired The First Phone Call From Heaven, the bestselling novel by Mitch Albom that was published last November by Harper. Denise Dinovi and Alison Greenspan will produce. The book opens on a morning in the small town of Coldwater, Mi, when the phones start ringing and the voices say they are calling from heaven. While each call is greeted differently — some with love, some with religious zeal, some with fear — a grieving single father with an inquisitive and hopeful son takes it upon himself to uncover whether these callers are hoaxers, or they are really dialing long distance.
