Own the rights?
An excursion into the forest - taking a novel turn by adding in an angle of it being a volunteer envirornmentalist cleanup team - brings a likable cast of characters - mostly teens/early twenties with a couple of older characters (including Dan Haggerty, best known as Grizzly Adams but who also appeared in another superior but now obscure horror movie - Elves, which sadly has also yet to land on DVD) into a battle against some nasty demonic creatures who seem to have been awakened or summoned by the latent psychic powers of one of the characters.I'll touch on the sole weakness of this movie first - the special effects were clearly subpar. A lot of times if a horror movie has a really low budget (which I figure The Channeler probably did) they'll pour almost everything into getting the best effects possible and leave the rest of the movie to fend for itself. Here the opposite is apparently true - the whole rest of the movie - the casting, the cinematography, the general production - is extremely well done, while it's the monster effects that require a substantial suspension of disbelief on the part of the viewer. I wish they could have taken both routes - affording both better effects and the superior all-around feel of the rest of the movie - but given the choice I think they made the right decision with what they had available. It doesn't hurt us to have to use our imaginations to make up for the effects shortcomings once in a while.Beautiful locations, beautiful girls (including a personal favorite actress of mine in Brenda Lynn Klemme) and well-done story and characters. It's a shame this is so obscure. Highly recommended, but good luck in finding a decent copy.
