31 December 2010 1:55 PM, PST | BestWeekEver | See recent BestWeekEver news »

2010 has been a year of great happiness and great, grave disappointments. But before we all ring in what will hopefully be a much perkier and upbeat 2011, I thought I’d take the time to apologize to some people whose feelings I may have hurt this year. Presenting my Giant List of 2010 Apologies. Sincere “I’m Sorries” to the following people and things: • To Lindsay Lohan. For calling you an assh*le on the red carpet at the MTV Movie Awards. Bright side? I did say “Nice pants.” VH1 TV Shows | Music Videos | Celebrity Photos | News & Gossip (link) • To All The Dogs At Westminster. We are sorry your owners have in-breeded you to the point of r-tardation and that we laugh at your pain. On the bright side, we would crush you to death with affection. (link) • To Glee. For giving up on you this season. (link) • To Every Other Celebrity »

George Clooney returns to space with Cuaron's 'Gravity'

17 December 2010 11:45 AM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

Despite recently acting as a producer to help other Mexican filmmakers rise to prominence, it has been a long wait for a new film by Children of Men helmer Alfonso Cuaron. The wait will not last much longer. His next effort, Gravity, has attracted some big names along the way – Angelina Jolie, Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr. Now, perhaps the biggest name of all, George Clooney, will join Sandra Bullock in the expensive sci-fi thriller and finally allow the film to enter production. Clooney will replace Downey Jr., who, despite being attached to Gravity since March was forced to back out due to scheduling issues after signing on to produce and possibly star in How To Talk To Girls. Cuaron, who co-wrote the script with his son Jonas and Rodrigo Garcia, struggled to find his female lead after the above starlets all declined – each time pushing production back. »

Bradley Cooper's drug commercial explained, George Clooney embraces 'Gravity'

16 December 2010 5:18 PM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Remember that commercial for "The Clear Pill" featuring Bradley Cooper? Viral marketing, clearly. And it turns out it's for the film "Limitless," which finds a down-on-his-luck Cooper getting a new life (and face-time with Robert De Niro) after taking a pill that lets him utilize all of his brainpower. There should be a lesson in here about not taking the easy way out, but the jarring sight of a disheveled Cooper makes us think the idea isn't half bad. [Trailer below, via YouTube]

Robert Downey Jr. is out, and George Clooney is in for Warner Brothers' "Gravity." Directed by Alfonso Cuarón ("Children of Men") and co-starring Sandra Bullock, the film is about the two remaining survivors in a battered space station trying to get back to earth. Downey Jr. previously dropped out for a scheduling conflict. [Deadline]

South by Southwest teases the lineup for its 2011 film festival, with Jake Gyllenhaal's "Source Code" as opener. »

George Clooney Replaces Downey in ‘Gravity’

16 December 2010 4:44 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

George Clooney is set to star alongside Sandra Bullock in Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, a 3D outer space survival story preparing to shoot in Spring 2011.  Clooney replaces Robert Downey Jr. who left the project last month due to scheduling conflicts.

Clooney will play a veteran spacewalker and the leader of a team of astronauts repairing the Hubble telescope when they are bombarded by orbiting debris.  Bullock is set as Ryan Stone, a technician on her first mission who braves the emptiness to find a way back to Earth.

I was sorry to see Downey jettisoned, but Clooney exudes a similar enough charm and movie star quality that the production shouldn’t miss a single beat.  It’s a testament to the project’s quality that Cuaron was able to find another A-lister so quickly that wanted to be a part of this ambitious film, especially for a supporting role like this. »

Clooney and Bullock Strap On 'Gravity' Boots

16 December 2010 2:24 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I feel like we've already covered Alfonso Cuaron's 3D outer space thriller Gravity to death, and it isn't even set to begin production until late April or early May. Yet, here we are again.

Sandra Bullock has been locked in to the lead female role, that of the survivor of a decimated space station hellbent on returning to earth to be with her young daughter. It's a role that had been either offered to or rumored for everyone from Angelina Jolie to Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman over the past eight months.

Through it all, Robert Downey Jr. had remained a fixture in the role of the space station team leader but now he has bowed out of the project due to scheduling issues. Deadline confirmed today that Warner Bros has booked none other than George Clooney to replace him.

It's miraculous that after all the shuffling, the film »

"The Insider" confirms that George Clooney will step in for the departing Robert Downey Jr. in the upcoming sci-fi thriller 'Gravity' opposite Sandra Bullock. Directed by Alfonso Cuaron ('Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,' 'Children of Men'), 'Gravity' centers around a female astronaut struggling to survive after a disaster in space and her efforts to return to Earth. Clooney will play a pivotal role as a fellow astronaut who experiences the disaster alongside her. Downey Jr. remained attached to the film up until November after, over the course of almost a year, it went through a variety of female stars who flirted with starring including Angelina Jolie, Natalie Portman, Marion Cotillard, Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively. The 3D outer-space adventure is scheduled to begin filming this spring.

George Clooney Has Gravity

Sound may not be able to travel in a vacuum, but if you were somehow floating miles above the Earth, you might just be able to make out Children of Men director Alfonso Cuaron shouting for joy at the news that George Clooney has stepped into the breach to snatch one of the two main roles in his new sci-fi drama Gravity. The film, which boasts a prominent starring role for an actress, sees a female astronaut struggling to make it back to Earth after her colleagues are killed by space debris that destroys their station. That role was originally supposed to have been filled by Angelina Jolie, who was solidly tethered, then drifted away, only to be pulled back in later. But then she cut the cord permanently, kicking off a search that covered most available actresses in Hollywood and beyond, including Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Marion Cotillard and Blake Lively. »

George Clooney Replaces Robert Downey Jr. In Cuaron’s ‘Gravity’

16 December 2010 1:34 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

There were rumors in October that Robert Downey Jr. may drop Gravity due to his busy schedule, and now it has been confirmed by THR. The actor will be replaced by none other than George Clooney. Although he has a minor role, he will star alongside our lead Sandra Bullock.

Its been a whirlwind last year, with Angelina Jolie, Marion Cotillard, Scarlett Johansson, Blake Lively and Natalie Portman all involved in the space thriller. With a primary cast set, it looks like Warner Bros. can finally launch this project into production. Before Clooney signed, the studio even considered scrapping the project altogether.

Clooney will play “the role of team leader of a space station.” Along with Bulllock, they “are the sole survivors when the space station is decimated by the debris field from an exploded asteroid. Bullock will carry much of the action adventure, a mother who is hellbent on »

George Clooney Steps in for Robert Downey Jr in Gravity

16 December 2010 10:30 AM, PST | movies.about.com | See recent About.com Hollywood Movies news »

Gravity had better be worth it after all these months of hearing about one big name actor after another attaching themselves and then leaving the project. The latest actor to have his name thrown into Gravity is Oscar winner George Clooney who, according to The Hollywood Reporter, has been signed up to star opposite Sandra Bullock. Robert Downey Jr recently vacated the role due to other commitments, and it appears director Alfonso Cuaron has lassoed Clooney for the role.

The male role in Gravity is actually a smaller supporting part, with Bullock's character handling the majority of the screen time. Despite the size of the role, Downey Jr had been attached for the longest to the project as a series of actresses came and went. Bullock finally settled into the role which had at times interested Angeline Jolie, Scarlett Johansson, Blake Lively, and Natalie Portman.

Geek shows and movies on UK TV in the coming week

9 December 2010 10:03 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

The Walking Dead ends in the UK, the original Wallander is on, Dirk Gently arrives, and there are lots of films to look forward to as well...

As many of our favourite shows finish or break for the winter and holiday hiatus, we reach the short lull before the madness of Christmas scheduling.

But there's still lots of great telly to be found in the upcoming week and we give you the highlights of the next seven days' worth of televisual delights and curiosities.

Tonight, Friday, December 10th, The Walking Dead finale airs at 10:00pm on FX. Entitled Ts-19, the episode begins with our group of survivors finally reaching what appears to be a zombie-free haven. But that would be too easy, wouldn't it? It was far too short a series with far too long to wait until it starts again, but have a look and see if you »

The Top 10 Alternative Christmas Films!

8 December 2010 4:28 PM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

It’s that time of year again; it’s dark at 4pm, the air is crisp and often below freezing, lights twinkle from every crevice and you’re already sick of hearing Mariah Carey warble “All I Want for Christmas is You”… Yes, it’s Christmas time again and as the festive period draws ever closer, avoiding succumbing to the cheer and joy is a daily battle you’re sure to lose.

Now I’m not a Grinch – in fact I’m far from it, the lead up to the big day is one of my favourite times of the year (I think inside, I’m actually still about 6 and three quarters!) – but the gloss and exaggerated schmaltz of the period can certainly become tiresome very quickly.

Now I don’t want to belittle the sickly saccharine taste of holiday romantic comedies (Love Actually is a classic), the formulaic overcoming »

Watch: Trailer For Peter Mullan's Acclaimed 'Neds'

Scottish actor Peter Mullan's recently been exposed to a wider audience than ever before by stealing the show in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," but the savvy have been fans of Mullan for years thanks to his outstanding performances in the likes of "Trainspotting," "My Name Is Joe," "Children Of Men," "Boy A" and the "Red Riding" trilogy. But even fans of his acting may not be aware that Mullan was responsible for a couple of very strong directorial efforts, the dark comedy "Orphans" in 1997, and the punishing, but thoroughly excellent "The Magdalene Sisters" in 2002. The Poison Tree's "My Only Friend" Through The Lens Of Orson Welles

2 December 2010 4:38 PM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

In the history of cinema, there are few shots as technically stimulating, or as spectacularly choreographed as the opening tracking shot of Orson Welles' 1958 Film Noir masterpiece, "Touch of Evil." There are other contenders to be sure, Altman's homage to Welles' famous shot in "The Player" comes to mind. Long amazing sequences in "Magnolia" and Children of Men" stand out too, with the latter being my favorite of all. But "Touch of Evil" was first, and it's more than 3 minute continuous crane shot brilliantly serves to raise the tension as the audience anxiously watches a bomb laden car leave a parking lot to drive a short way across the Us border -- never far from lovers Charlton Heston and Janet Leigh, strolling along on what would seem a pleasant evening.

The argument could be made that taking any decent piece of music and setting it to this shot would be cool to watch, »
