Lucy lives with her father Freddie in a remote part of the South African outback. When Freddie is out at a local bar getting a few drinks, Hugo arrives at the house, looking for the money he is owed on the house. He decides to wait with Lucy for Freddie to return but, as Lucy mocks him he becomes more and more on edge and impatient, leading to a tense situation in the house.
I happened to catch this short film on television after I had watched something else and was immediately taken in by the atmosphere that existed even before the plot started to unfold. The director gives a very sparse feel to the film in every regard – the characters' lives, the sets, the score, the dialogue, and it all works really well in setting up a rather involving little story. The plot is engaging and quite tense even if I wasn't sure where it was actually going for parts, but it was the 'feel' of the film that won it for me with Handler doing well with the whole film.
The cast are good – although I don't know their names at all. Hugo was appropriately small time and was played well – right down to the sheen of sweat on his brow, you know that this is a bully who has no authority in life other that those smaller than him. Lucy was very sexy and very tough, with a body language that spoke of a real vulnerability underneath – her look on the bench after being raped spoke a lot more than the eight words she said in that same scene. Freddie had little time to make an impact on me but he was good as well. Overall, an interesting short that I would definitely watch again if I get the chance.
