Watching the August 2003, series of 'Roger Roger', then seeing critics slam it as boring the next day -firstly indicates that they have a lot to learn, but also shows the distance television making has made since the first series in 1996/7. John Sullivan has had loads of crap spin offs but this is not one of them.
Why doesn't the BBC make this kind of programme anymore; prime time comedy (i.e 'my hero' or 'my family') would almost be acceptable if they cut out the patronising canned laughter. But 'Roger Roger' stood out from the surrounding programs in almost every sense - the lighting/graphics/script/hilarious reality all looked like they had been retained straight from the late 1990s - a period of television making which was moved away from too quickly. This style might include things like 'this life' or some programme ( i can't remember the name of) which illustrated a number of simultaneous and totally unrelated parodies in the city (quite trippy for primetime).
Anyway, i cherish each of these episodes, and hope that the BBC starts making some decent comedy - it's almost like they have been watching 'i love 198- whatever, too much). F*** the millennium, we want progression.
