Although Hal Holbrook has been performing his Tony award winning one-man show of "Mark Twain Tonight" for over 55 years (2009), this Emmy Award winning presentation was the only time it was nationally televised.
The makers of this production videotaped more material than could be shown on television, and because time was needed for commercial breaks, some of that material was edited out before the telecast. Much of it has been restored on the DVD, which runs ninety minutes even without commercials.
This Broadway production of "Mark Twain Tonight!" opened at the Longacre Theater in New York on March 23, 1966 and ran for 85 performances.
