The Foywonder's Ten Worst Horror Films of the Decade

23 December 2009 8:31 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

The first decade of the new millennium has come to an end, and that means it is now time for film sites all over the web to begin posting their various retrospectives and lists recalling the decade that was. I generally as a rule dislike such lists because they are always so subjective. Then I said screw it and took it upon myself to do one of my own naming the ten worst horror movies of the past decade. Besides, people love bitching on the Internet about lists like this, and who am I to deny readers yet another excuse to get into pointless flame wars over personal opinions.

Of course, this list is just my personal opinion which is not legally binding ... unless Proposition 304 passes. And we all pray that it will.

I set two rules when putting this list together: Only horror movies that received fairly wide theatrical »

Emmanuelle Chriqui Joins Val Kilmer in Renny Harlin’s Georgia

27 October 2009 11:19 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Before we continue, Renny Harlin’s upcoming film “Georgia” is not about The Peach State and the tale how Coca-Cola will one day flow out of our drinking fountains.  “Georgia” is based on last year’s conflict between Russia and the country of Georgia.  THR reports that hottie/red-carpet eye candy Emmanuelle Chriqui will play opposite Val Kilmer in the drama about an American journalist (Kilmer) and his cameraman caught in the crossfire and a Georgia native (Chriqui) and doctoral student who becomes entangled with them.

Chriqui is best known for her role on “Entourage” playing the love interest of Kevin Connolly’s character, Eric.  Since “Entourage’ is a fantasy, I believe the most recent episode featured a tearful goodbye between them before Eric had to go and drop the The One Ring into Mount Doom.  Kilmer has appeared in numerous roles but he has a lifetime free pass from »

Paul Schrader Gets Xtreme

6 October 2009 9:57 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The man who gave the world Travis Bickle and the most bad-ass Jesus ever, is set to return to theaters, as writer-director Paul Schrader has set his sights on “Xtreme City” a bilingual film set in the bustling streets of Mumbai. The film, which will see Schrader collaborating with Bollywood writer, Mushtaq Shiekh, will be financed independently by sports agent Dwight Manley, which makes sense considering Schrader’s “go to hell” attitude toward Hollywood. Hit the jump for a quick plot synopsis and a few musings on Paul Schrader.

Variety has reported that Schrader’s “Xtreme City” will be a tale focusing on a a former U.S. Ranger who teams up with an Indian commando in order to find the Ranger’s kidnapped sister-in-law, who is being held by a powerful Mumbai crime lord. Schrader says that the film will be firmly within the Bollywood mold, incorporating drama and comedy into the story, »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘12 Rounds’ Fails to Entertain For Even 12 Minutes

10 July 2009 3:11 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Renny Harlin’s “12 Rounds,” starring the WWE’s John Cena and now available on Blu-Ray and DVD, is a shockingly dull affair, an action film that tries to maintain a breakneck pace but forgets that movie rollercoasters are only fun with ups And downs instead of just a numbing series of stunt sequences.

Blu-Ray Rating: 1.0/5.0 The reasonably effective Cena (although he had more to do in “The Marine”) plays a New Orleans police officer named Danny Fisher, an average cop who happens to stop a brilliant thief whose girlfriend is accidentally killed in the process. A year later, the thief has escaped from prison with only one apparent goal - enacting his revenge on Danny.

12 Rounds was released on Blu-Ray on June 30th, 2009.

The criminal mastermind unleashes a ridiculously plot-hole-filled series of challenges for our muscled hero, including stopping a moving cable car and escaping an about-to-drop elevator. »

The Real Story Behind The Exorcist To Become a Movie

9 June 2009 9:40 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

William Friedkin's The Exorcist still has my vote for the scariest movie of all time, and based on the legacy of the film, I happen to think it may never be surpassed. Of course, the movie was a pretty big success back in 1973, and it became an unlikely franchise, leading to two sequels and two prequels (none of which measure up to the original). Based on the reception of Renny Harlin's Exorcist: The Beginning, I would think that the franchise would have ended there, but now it appears that we may be getting another Exorcist film in the near future. The good news is, it's neither a sequel nor a remake. According to Bloody Disgusting [1], Vertigo Entertainment (The Ring, The Grudge, Quarantine) has acquired the rights to Mark Opsasnick's book The Real Story Behind The Exorcist, with the intention of adapting it for the big screen. The book »

Five Favourite Films with Renny Harlin

29 May 2009 2:42 AM, PDT | Rotten Tomatoes | See recent Rotten Tomatoes news »

Finnish director Renny Harlin has one of the most schizophrenic CVs in movie-dom. He's directed some of the most beloved action films of the last 20 years, including Die Hard 2, Deep Blue Sea, The Long Kiss Goodnight and, of course, Cliffhanger. His latest, the faintly-ridiculous but always-enjoyable 12 Rounds continues this tradition. He's also, however, responsible for two of the most reviled movies of recent times -- for notorious flop Cutthroat Island and for taking a hatchet to Paul Schrader's The Exorcist: The Beginning. For someone with such a varied back catalogue, we had no idea what his five »

Before the Oscars, They Belonged to Us, Part 3

Disclaimer: This article may contain sarcasm; irony and “LOLs” proceed with caution.

The Final Chapter (read Part 2 here)! We have Howard the Duck, Freejack and Shyamalan flicks on the list; these are never good signs. Nonetheless we are bringing it all to you in full-color and in 3-D. (Ed. Note: Due to the economy, 3-D has been dropped and will be replaced by Smell-o-vision — check for your scratch and sniff cards in about 4-6 weeks.) Best Sound went to rage-zombie veterans Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke, leaving Mark Weingarten who worked on Rejuvenatrix in the dust. The Sound Editing section contains one too many references to Ron Silver, and at least two references to a Roger Corman film.

The visual effects category pulled on our heartstrings this year due to the loss of Stan Winston, who was noted en memoriam along with other heroes, Vampira, Leonard Rosenman and Charles H. Schneer »

Before the Oscars, They Belonged to Us, Part 1

24 February 2009 3:04 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Disclaimer: This article may contain sarcasm, irony and “LOLs”; proceed with caution.

It’s time once again for horror at the Oscars. Sunday’s festivities were filled with folks who have worked in the genre and per usual, I feel if it’s a win for Danny Boyle, it is a win for rage-zombie fans everywhere. Seems like a lot of folks this year are veterans of Exorcist: The Beginning, Amityville: A New Generation and Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Of course, the most important genre win would be Greg Cannom, a staple of 80’s horror effects; he worked on such films as Fright Night Part 2, The Lost Boys and The Howling.

Now some movies on this list might be “kinda horror.” These thrillers or genre-friendly frameworks are on the ghoulish cusp and are marked with an asterisk. Some flicks on the list are there because, what the fuck, »
