New season, same champs: NBC in demo, eye in viewers

2 October 2002 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Last season, NBC dominated ratings in the key 18-49 demo, while the peacock and CBS often battled for the crown in total viewers. For the first week of the 2002-03 season, it was more of the same. Thanks to a record-setting 16.6 rating/41 share for the ninth-season opener of Friends, plus some exceptional series debuts, NBC won the demo for the week ending Sept. 29. Meanwhile, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (a series record 30.5 million viewers) and its new spinoff CSI: Miami (23.1 million) helped CBS capture the glory for total viewers, according to figures from Nielsen Media Research. Overall, NBC averaged a 5.4/15 in the demo, with 13.4 million total viewers. Following were CBS (4.6/12, 13.9 million), ABC (3.8/10, 9.9 million) and Fox (3.1/9, 7.1 million). In addition to such stalwarts as Friends and ER (13.2/32), NBC delivered strong openings for the new Sunday drama American Dreams (4.7/12) and such returning shows as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (5.3/17), Law & Order: Criminal Intent (4.9/11) and a two-hour fourth-season opener of The West Wing (6.7/17). Meanwhile, the new suburban comedy Hidden Hills (7.4/18) hung on to an impressive 84% of the huge audience for the special Niles and Daphne wedding episode of Frasier (8.8/22). »
