Presenting our weekly round-up of the big news stories from the world of movie superheroes…

The Dark Knight Rises continued to dominate the headlines this week as a Los Angeles press screening of the six-minute prologue was accompanied by the first steps in the viral marketing campaign of the hugely-anticipated sequel, code-named ‘Operation Early Bird’. Beginning with the arrival of a series of mysterious documents – a CIA Bulletin on Dr. Leonid Pavel (Alon Abutbul) via Wired, a censored transcript via Empire and a third document from the Twitter account @thefirerises, which pointed to this website. At the time, it featured a countdown that ended at 6pm GMT yesterday - at which time the site ground to a halt under the weight of half the internet – before revealing itself as a map allowing fans to book tickets for early screenings of the IMAX prologue. Comics: Looking Back At The 6 Other Times The Avengers And The X-men Have Exchanged Fisticuffs

10 December 2011 12:15 PM, PST | | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

Note: MTV Geek used as a reference for this article With helpful assistance from MTV Geek, I take a look back at 6 previous times the Avengers and the X-Men have come to blows in preparation for the big 2012 showdown between the two superhero teams. Tales of Suspense Vol 1 #49 January, 1964 Editor-in-Chief: Stan Lee Cover Artist: Jack Kirby Writer: Stan Lee As pointed out by MTV Geek, this comic marked just the third ever appearance by the X-Men and pits Iron Man against Angel. During an explosion at a Stark factory, Angel gets doused with radiation rays that turn him evil. In short, this issue featured a lot of aerial dog fighting with Iron Man basically being unable to keep up with his winged adversary. With all the advancements Tony has made over the years, I'm pretty sure this outcome would be reversed if/when these two meet again. In the end »

Shane Black talks Iron Man 3 cast, rules out Mandarin and Demon In A Bottle story

Shane Black has been giving fans a few more clues about Iron Man 3, which is expected to hit cinemas on May 3, 2013.

The Kiss Kiss Bang Bang filmmaker, who was appointed director after Jon Favreau stepped away from the Marvel franchise, spoke about the upcoming film at Long Beach Comic Con, reports Comic Book Resources.

Revealing that he had been involved in the first film in a very small way - "Downey and Favreau came to my house and said 'we need your help' and we talked for a few days" - Black (pictured right) had at first planned to write Iron Man 3 as well as directing it.

He spoke of his surprise at learning that screenwriter Drew Pearce had been brought on board "but what happened was this great collaboration and friendship with this great, lovely British writer."

Bleeding Cool point out that a Cgc 9.6 copy of The Avengers #1 was sold for a record $250,000 by Metropolis Collectibles last week. With the movie a little over six months away, it appears as if interest in the superhero team is at an all time high. Metropolis Collectibles COO Vincent Zurzolo had this to say: "This exceptional copy is tied with two other copies of Avengers #1 Cgc in 9.6. The other two copies have never been brought to market. Their owners have no interest in selling. This makes this the only publicly sold copy of a Cgc 9.6 to date. We are very proud to make this the highest price anybody has ever paid for a copy of Avengers »

The Week in Spandex - The Dark Knight Rises prologue, Marvel Phase Two, The Punisher, Ghost Rider and more

Presenting our weekly round-up of all the biggest news stories from the world of movie superheroes…

It seems that Tom Cruise’s latest impossible mission, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, will enjoy a hefty IMAX opening when it hits North America this December, with /Film breaking the news that the sequel will be accompanied by a six-minute prologue for Christopher Nolan’s final Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. Warner Bros. employed the same tactic back in 2007, attaching the opening sequence of The Dark Knight to the post-apocalyptic Will Smith actioner I Am Legend and giving us our first glimpse of Heath Ledger’s Joker in action. Assuming Nolan follows suit and takes the opportunity to introduce Bane, then my guess is we’ll get some kind of origin montage that makes use of the footage shot in India back in May when Josh Pence filmed scenes as a young Ra »

Stan Lee Earns Visual Effects Society's Lifetime Achievement Award

19 October 2011 2:08 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Without big-screen superheroes, special effects masters would be forced to subsist on big budget natural disaster flicks for work, and we all know those have been out of style since "Acid Rain 3D"... which, uh, is not a real movie.

It’s no surprise then that the industry would feel a debt of gratitude to Stan Lee, without whom some of Marvel’s most beloved heroes — like Spider-Man, the X-Men, Iron Man and the Avengers — wouldn't have seen the light of day.

THR reports that “the Man” will be honored with the Visual Effects Society's 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award. Ves Chair Jeffrey A Okun released a statement explaining the choice.

"Stan Lee's imagination has created a completely original and profitable niche in the entertainment world and has allowed visual effects to flex its muscle in service to it! Thanks to Mr. Lee's fantastic creations and amazing stories he not »

And so they did. Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Tom Hiddleston, Cobie Smulders, Clark Gregg and Marvel President of Production Kevin Feige took the stage at New York Comic Con’s IGN Theater Saturday night to screen new footage from 2012’s The Avengers and geek out on all things super and heroic.

While the wildly enthusiastic crowd oohed and aahed over a clip of Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow recruiting a down-and-out Bruce Banner in an Indian slum (one guy yelled, “I want your baby, Scarlett!”), they were every bit as reactive when it came to the panel itself. »

But all jokes aside, I better hear Cap shouting that line by himself come May 4, 2012. The Avengers is a team of superheroes, appearing in magazines published by Marvel Comics. The team made its debut in The Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963), and was created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist / co-plotter Jack Kirby, following the trend of super-hero teams after the success of DC Comics with the Justice League. The Avengers is an upcoming American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, based upon the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. There were thousands of New York Comic Con attendees crammed into the IGN Theater at the Javits Center Saturday night, and thousands more hopefuls waiting in another hall in case someone was willing to give up their seat from the previous panel. Onstage were Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige, along with stars Clark Gregg ("Agent Phil Coulson"), Cobie Smulders ("Agent Maria Hill"), Tom Hiddleston ("Loki"), Chris Evans ("Captain America") and unannounced surprise guest Mark Ruffalo ("Hulk").

Feige remained tight-lipped when it came to revealing much about next summer's "Avengers" film, currently being edited by its director Joss Whedon. Doctor Doom – Badass of the Week

A special edition of Badass of the Week by Ben Thompson

“Show me the puny mortal who does not tremble at the name of Doctor Doom!”

I’ve always held a soft spot in my heart for comic books characters who go out there with no inherent super-powers and roll the dice in toe-to-toe combat against genetically-engineered superhuman mutant warriors from some quadrant of space where people are born with the muscular density of a rhinoceros.  Never is this more true than in situations where the aforementioned character is a sort-of-misunderstood supervillain who wants nothing more than an eternal end to war, conflict, substandard wages, hunger, and illiteracy – and who seeks to accomplish these lofty idealistic goals by violently obliterating all who stand in his way and replacing every government on Earth-616 with an autocratic New World Order devoted to worshipping him as a living God among mortals. »
