Examining Hollywood Remakes--Captain America: The First Avenger

2 May 2016 9:38 AM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

Our series on remakes continues and this time we’ve got one that you may not even realize was filmed in live-action before. In honor of the release of Captain America: Civil War on Friday, we’re talking about the star spangled man with the plan. This week, Cinelinx looks at Captain America: The First Avenger.

It’s not too often that a remake is much, much, much better than the original but we have one of those rare instances in the case of Captain America. Years before Captain America: The First Avenger, the first movie version of the star-spangled hero of WW2 was filmed in 1990 and directed by Albert Pyun.

This movie…was awful! It has a 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and went directly to a video release, wisely bypassing theaters to prevent millions of people demanding their money back. Captain America is played in this mess by Matt Salinger, »

Oscars: Ranking the Best Picture Nominees

25 February 2016 4:01 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Justin Chang: Guy, we started this deep-dive conversation about the best picture race less than an hour after Alejandro G. Inarritu clinched the Directors Guild of America’s top prize for “The Revenant,” which was pretty much the last confirmation we needed — after the Producers Guild picked “The Big Short” and the Screen Actors Guild opted for “Spotlight” — that this really is the wildest, craziest, most confoundingly unpredictable best-picture Oscar race in years. Exciting, isn’t it? I’d be more excited if this recent turn of events didn’t seem to favor “The Revenant,” which now has extraordinary momentum on its side. There we were, hoping the film’s Golden Globe triumphs would simply be an isolated HFPA fluke — but then it came roaring back with a vengeance, not unlike that easily distracted CGI bear at its center, ready to sink its teeth back into the race and not let go this time. »

Screenwriter John August (“Big Fish,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”) has been named the recipient of the Writers Guild of America West’s Valentine Davies Award.

The honor has been given in recognition of his humanitarian efforts, civic service and his role in fostering a community of writers. August will be honored at the Writers Guild Awards West Coast ceremony on Feb. 13 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles.

“John is the writer we’d all want to be: wildly intelligent, deeply practical, effortlessly inventive, and generous to a fault,” said WGA West President Howard A. Rodman.

“Whether he’s creating apps, campaigning for marriage equality, mentoring younger writers, podcasting with Craig Mazin, sitting on our Negotiating Committee, or constructing a school in Malawi, John has made service to the larger community a part of his second nature. Protip: when you find yourself in difficult straits, ask yourself ‘What would John August do? »
