Pit, a new character in the new game "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" for the "Nintendo Wii", was originally supposed to be an unlockable character in "Super Smash Bros.ginal]", but due to the sudden yet enormous popularity of Pokemon, he was replaced by Jigglypuff.

Originally this game was going to be called "Dragon King: The Fighting Game" for the Nintendo 64, and didn't have any Nintendo characters at all. It was planned to have been a franchise just like what became of the Super Smash Bros. series.

Peach, Bowser, Mewtwo, King Dedede and Meowth were also originally supposed to be unlock-able characters for this game. Meowth was the only one to not be a playable character in the sequels.

There is a total of 10 different models of the Fighting Polygon Team. Each represents each of the 12 characters with similar fighting techniques. Only one Polygon Fighter represents three characters at the same time which is Mario, Luigi and Ness.

The idea of characters entering on the floating platforms came from the original "Mario bros" game on the Atari consoles, where Mario and Luigi entered on floating platforms after they lost a life.

It was considered at one point that two characters from Rare were going to be included in the game. The characters are Banjo from Banjo-Kazooie and James Bond from Goldeneye 007.
