Bunny in Drag
3 April 2016 | by (New York City) – See all my reviews

Flora Finch is coming to visit, so Wally Van pretends to be John Bunny, while Bunny pretends to be the housemaid. This fools no one except Bunny.

Before Chaplin, John Bunny was Amerixa's leading comedy star. He looked like Mr. Pickwick, had he been drawn by Teniel, so it should come as no surprise that in drag he looks like the Duchess in Alice in Wonderland. Bunny does not mince around in drag. He drops teatrays and smokes cigars and is very amusing in his self-absorbed, old- fashioned masculinity.

Bunny had spent decades on stage before wandering over Vitagraph and becoming a huge star. With his distinctive looks, he was immediately recognizable in an era when the idea of named movie stars was really starting to take hold. He appeared in hundreds of comedy shorts, often with Miss Finch as his foil, and died the year after this picture was released. It you wish to see him in action, it's on view at the Eye Institute site on Youtube.
