‘American Horror Story’ Season 1 Episode 9: ‘Spooky Little Girl’ Recap

1 December 2011 7:35 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

American Horror Story creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk infuse the latest episode of their increasingly bold FX program with a little nostalgia for some real life L.A. noir by casting Mena Suvari (American Reunion) as Elizabeth Short – more widely known as The Black Dahlia.

In a twist on the lore surrounding the infamous Dhalia murder, Murphy and Falchuk have reorganized history a bit to see Short, a struggling actress, raped and accidentally murdered by her dentist, played by Joshua Malina (The West Wing, Sports Night). However, the dentist happens to have the spirit of a twisted surgeon lurking in his basement – just waiting for a shot at fame.

‘Spooky Little Girl’ is certainly an appropriate title for this episode, which finds Ben (Dylan McDermott) home alone amongst a gaggle of spooky ...

American Horror Story Recap: Spooky Little Girl

30 November 2011 8:00 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

If you haven’t been keeping up with American Horror Story by creators Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy (Glee, Nip/Tuck), go get caught up on our previous recaps before proceeding any further. On last week’s episode, “Rubber Man,” we found that it was indeed Tate Langdon (Evan Peters) running around in the S&M suit. It seems that Tate is just as comfortable in the suit as he is without it, as he and Violet (Taissa Farmiga) took their relationship to the next level. Tate’s mom, Constance (Jessica Lange) was none too pleased with his behavior, as we found out in tonight’s episode, “Spooky Little Girl.” But Tate isn’t the only horny ghost running around, as Hayden (Kate Mara) continues to use her wiles to manipulate the living and the dead alike. Lots to talk about, so hit the jump for my recap. [The following episode recap contains spoilers.] Rather than a strict play-by-play, »

The Trouble with Thanksgiving TV

30 November 2011 10:01 AM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

It’s officially the Holiday Season, that latter part of every year when Americans, perhaps in a bid to combat the increasingly chilly weather, draw together with friends and family to celebrate whichever holidays are most important to them, usually starting with Thanksgiving. It’s at this time of year, right as kids start getting time off from school, that most television series start their hiatuses, going into weeks to months of repeats or preemptions to save up new episodes for the next year. This has, in the past, prompted networks to commission Holiday Specials to fill air time and for many, these have become holiday traditions in their own right.

However, while there are many fantastic (and some pretty terrible) Christmas Specials, Thanksgiving is mostly left out. Sure, there’s A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, but that’s about it, and very few would argue that it’s more memorable than, »

Six to watch: one-season wonders

30 November 2011 2:40 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

They say that only the good die young – and that can be applied to TV shows as well. Which series have faced an unwelcome early demise?

E4 has a history of uninspiring Us imports with the likes of One Tree Hill, The Cleveland Show and Samantha Who? all finding a home on our green and pleasant shores via the broadcaster's schedules.

But with Charlie's Angels, an unwanted and entirely unnecessary update of the cult 70s show of the same name, they may have outdone themselves.

The Angels lasted just four episodes (eight were eventually aired) before being axed by ABC, becoming the latest in a long line of series to have come a cropper at the hands of Us TV's chop-happy execs.

While Charlie's Angels fully deserved its fate, the annals of Us TV history are littered with superb shows that despite audience appeal and critical acclaim got canned after just one series. »

Moneyball – review

26 November 2011 4:06 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Brad Pitt is at his best as a baseball manager who pursues a less conventional route to success

In a classic essay in his 1954 book God's Country and Mine, the French-born but American-by-choice Jacques Barzun wrote: "Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball… That baseball fitly expresses the powers of the nation's mind and body is a merit separate from the glory of being the most active, agile, varied, articulate and brainy of all group games. It is of and for our century." This is probably one of the reasons why it has inspired so many remarkable Hollywood movies, a list now joined by the cynically or realistically named Moneyball.

Baseball is the quintessential national game, with its own mystique and built-in traditions, but it is also a cut-throat business where change and innovation are important. Moneyball brings these elements together in a »

HitFix Interview: Bradley Whitford talks ABC's 'Have a Little Faith'

The resilient Hallmark Hall of Fame franchise premieres its first installment of the season on Sunday (November 27) night, but after years as destination viewing on CBS, Hallmark is moving to ABC for "Mitch Albom's Have a Little Faith."   The movie also marks a change of pace for leading man Bradley Whitford, who has to set aside the ace sarcastic delivery that he's brought to "The West Wing" and "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" and "The Good Guys," to play the mostly-earnest small screen proxy for Albom, who also served as writer and executive producer.   Based on Albom's »

Which TV shows are crying out for prequels?

24 November 2011 5:20 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Is it ever a good idea to revisit a classic such as Only Fools and Horses? If so, which shows need more of a backstory?

Prequels have been long used by the film industry to re-animate franchises that appeared dead, are now they are becoming increasingly common in TV. Last week the BBC announced that 21 years after James Herriot was last seen with his arm halfway up a cow's bottom, the TV vet would return in an All Creatures Great and Small Christmas special. Only this time the show would be set in 1930s Glasgow rather than post-second world war Yorkshire.

You can hardly blame the BBC for wanting to rekindle past ratings hits: All Creatures Great and Small, starring Christopher Timothy and a pre-Dr Who Peter Davison, attracted 13 million viewers at the peak of its popularity. But the move does not auger well for quality. The BBC has previous. »

Steve Jobs biopic offered to Social Network writer Aaron Sorkin

23 November 2011 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Oscar-winning screenwriter, who knew the Apple founder personally, says he's 'seriously considering' adapting Jobs biography

Aaron Sorkin, who brought the story of Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg to the big screen in the Oscar-winning drama The Social Network, looks set to tackle another tech innovator with news that he's "strongly considering" an offer to write a biopic about Apple founder Steve Jobs.

Speaking to E! Online, Sorkin – creator of The West Wing and a writer on forthcoming Oscar-tipped Brad Pitt drama Moneyball – said he was currently reading Walter Isaacson's biography of the late Apple co-founder, which studio Sony paid a reported $1m to option last month.

"Right now I'm just in the thinking-about-it stages," said Sorkin. "It's a really big movie and it's going to be a great movie no matter who writes it. He was a great entrepreneur, he was a great artist, a great thinker. He's probably inspired »

Aaron Sorkin might write the Steve Jobs biopic

Call it There Will Be Dialogue. Lots and lots and lots of clever dialogue: Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network, The West Wing) is "strongly considering" penning an upcoming Steve Jobs biopic, E! Online reports. While speaking at the P.S. Arts Express Yourself 2011 event, Sorkin disclosed that Sony asked him to write the screenplay for the film, which will be adapted from Walter Isaacson's biography. "Right now I'm just in the thinking-about it stages," Sorkin said. "It's a really big movie and it's going to be a great movie no matter who writes it." As one of the most successful screenwriters of all time, Sorkin seems like a natural choice to write the movie about one of the most successful tech moguls of all time. A Look at Mena Suvari as American Horror Story's The Black Dahlia

A short while ago we passed on the news that Mena Suvari had landed a guest starring role on "American Horror Story" as a young woman with a connection to the Harmon house. Her nickname? The Black Dahlia. Now we have our first look at Mena in character as Elizabeth Short.

Along with Suvari you'll see Joshua Malina ("The West Wing") as her dentist who lives in and operates out of the house that's the main location of the show. "My plan was to say to you
I can't reveal much, but boy, is it hard to get that rubber suit on," Malina joked with EW, referring to the show's most mysterious character. In all seriousness, he says, "I am a seemingly unassuming dentist who may or may not actually be so."

Look for Suvari and Malina to appear in the ninth episode, airing November 30th.
