Storyline

This film gets under the skin of a very marginalized group: recent immigrants to Hong Kong from Mainland China. Belying the expectation that they will belong in a territory now returned to China's sovereignty, they find themselves lonely, frustrated, poor and employable only in the most menial jobs from elevator service staff to prostitution. Painful to watch, but not a total waste of time...
8 August 2000 | by See all my reviews

The film was excruciatingly dull, but at the same time I found something to admire about the way it portrayed the lives of a group of lost souls wandering the streets and red light districts of Hong Kong. Tony Leung was very good, but the rest of the cast was unimpressive, though not necessarily bad. The major fault of the film was the screenplay, which had almost nothing happen in 2 hours. I'm sure that was by design, but the point was for the most part lost on me.
