The Costume Department bought the entire wardrobe from the production remains of The Job (2001), a recently cancelled television show, for four hundred dollars.
Nicole Kidman turned down the role of Frannie, because at the time, she was going through her divorce from Tom Cruise. She thought the role would have been too emotionally draining. She does however take a co-producing credit.
The Unrated Version is notorious for a scene where fellatio is witnessed by Meg Ryan's character, although it was later revealed in the film commentary, that the actress was using a rubber prop.
Mark Ruffalo went on undercover assignments with police officers to prepare for his role.
DIRECTOR CAMEO (Jane Campion): The bar waitress in the first date between Frannie and Detective Malloy.
Jane Campion had tried to direct the film ever since the book was published in 1996.
Nicole Kidman was originally cast as Frannie Thorstin.
One of the main notes Jane Campion gave Mark Ruffalo to portray Malloy was "never apologize".
The lines, "The still waters of your mouth/under a thicket of kisses", are from "Variations" by Federico García Lorca.
The lines, "Oh what can ail thee, knight-at-arms, Alone and palely loitering?...", are from "La Belle Dane Sans Merci" by John Keats.

Actress Kristen Schaal was an extra, and can be seen in the "Behind the Scenes" footage on the DVD.

Mickey Rourke was initially considered for a supporting role, however his involvement was allegedly vetoed by Nicole Kidman on the strength of Rourke's wild reputation. Rourke has stated in interviews that he was disappointed by this, as he believes it would have fast tracked his comeback.
