Disney to offer movies online

10 June 2008 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Disney will stream full-length movies on its Web site for the first time as part of its Wonderful World of Disney series on ABC, running now through August.

Finding Nemo is available at www.Disney.com/WWoD through Friday after the film aired Saturday on Disney-owned ABC. Monsters Inc., Haunted Mansion, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, Princess Diaries 2, Freaky Friday and Peter Pan also will be available on the site this summer.

A Disney spokesman said the decision to stream movies for free marks an "evolution" in the company's online strategy. Fox, Universal, Lionsgate and MGM have all previously placed titles on Hulu, the NBC Uni/News Corp.-owned JV, while Disney has gone the pay route and kept its films, for the most part, on iTunes.

Disney Channel does, though, stream episodes of its shows online for free.

The spokesman said that the "advertising strategy has not been finalized" for the films. Nemo currently employs a pre-roll and the others will, most likely, have the same, but this approach could change and a "presented by" option is also being considered. »

'Moon' lands at Universal

8 April 2008 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

After a bidding war among four studios, Universal has picked up Earth vs. Moon, a pitch from scribes Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, for Scott Stuber to produce.

The deal was in the mid- to high-six figures.

The plot details for what is being described as a sci-fi epic are being kept under wraps.

The acquisition marks the first for Stuber since the departure of partner Mary Parent, who last month became chairman of MGM's motion picture group. Stuber is production on The Wolf Man, starring Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins and being directed by Joe Johnston.

Stuber Prods.' Jon Mone is shepherding Earth vs. Moon. Lawrence Grey is overseeing for Universal.

Wernick and Reese will executive produce the project.

The duo created and executive produced Spike TV's The Joe Schmo Show, which eventually sold as an international format in the U.K., France, Spain and other countries. They are writing and executive producing Zombieland, set up at Sony with Gavin Polone producing.

Reese also was a writer on Pixar's Monsters, Inc., and Wernick earned three Emmys for his work in TV news. »
