Leftover 'Chicken' still tempting

10 November 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Sony Pictures' Zathura, Paramount Pictures' Get Rich or Die Tryin' and the Weinstein Co.'s debut release Derailed will try to knock Walt Disney Studios' Chicken Little off its perch this weekend, but it looks as if the CG-animated hit will join the illustrious group of such Pixar animated films as The Incredibles and Monsters, Inc. that each opened in November and held on to the top spot for two consecutive weeks. After bowing to $40 million last weekend, the first homegrown film from Disney's animators should drop less than 50% its second week in theaters, giving it a $22 million-$23 million weekend gross and the top spot for its sophomore session. The G-rated film also might take a bite out of Sony's highly regarded family film Zathura, from director Jon Favreau. »

'Incredibles' boosts Pixar Q4 results

10 February 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

The stellar boxoffice performance of the holiday release The Incredibles helped Pixar Animation Studios cruise past analyst expectations in its fourth quarter, though results were far short of the comparable period a year ago when Finding Nemo was in theaters. Beyond reporting earnings Thursday, chief executive Steve Jobs made it clear to Wall Street analysts that Pixar will not be taking part in the production of sequels to movies it made with the Walt Disney Co. Disney studio chairman Dick Cook said recently that Disney will create a special unit for making such movies, beginning with the planned theatrical release Toy Story 3. Jobs noted that the original movies it has made with Disney since its only sequel, Toy Story 2, have each earned more than Toy Story 2 and that profits to such sequels as Monsters, Inc. and Finding Nemo would have to be split with Disney. »

Disney Builds Animation Unit

3 February 2005 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Walt Disney has made secret plans to build its own animation studio following the split from Pixar Animation. The movie-making partnership ended last year after the two giants failed to agree terms for the continuation of their marketing and distribution agreement. Disney is planning to christen the new animation unit with Toy Story 3 - penciled in for a 2008 release. However Pixar - responsible some of the most successful animation hits of all time, including both Toy Story films, Finding Nemo, Monsters, Inc. and recent blockbuster The Incredibles - is still angered Disney retains the sole rights to make the sequels to all joint-venture films. The critically acclaimed animation company is expected to sign a new distribution deal with either Warner Bros or Twentieth Century Fox later this year. Cars - due to hit cinemas in June - is the last film to be released under their Disney-Pixar partnership. »
