Entertaining Family Film
satterwh2 March 2002
It stars Dan Haggerty, which should go a long way toward defining the genre. He's made a career from working with bears, so here they are. He's almost created a sub-genre of family film in his own right.

That said, this one fits the mold very well. If you want something you can watch with your kids, this might just be the ticket. The main characters played by Haggerty and Miko Hughes are well acted. Some of the minor characters go over the top, but that's not going to bother the kids.

Keep your expectations reasonable (it's not "Casa Blanca"!) and you'll have an enjoyable evening. I give it a 5.

Charming time traveling fantasy
bkoganbing11 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Dan Haggerty TV's Grizzly Adams stars in Escape To Grizzly Mountain another story about time travel. His part is so similar to Grizzly Adams that the producers issued a disclaimer.

Young Miko Hughes rescues a mistreated bear cub from a flea bag circus that is owned by Cynthia Palmer, a woman you love to hate. Fleeing town he and the cub come to a mysterious cave which when Hughes puts his handprint into a carving of same on the cave well sends him back to 1841 and the Jacksonian era wilderness where he finds some Cherokee and a mountain man who is Dan Haggerty. The cub however stayed in the present and Palmer and her henchmen recapture him.

I really couldn't see why they were paying so much attention to a cub in which their title to him is shaky. Still these are villains who really don't need an excuse to be mean.

Hughes takes Haggerty back to the present and with the help of Nik Winterhawk a modern Cherokee they get the cub back to the wilds of 1841 where life will be a lot better for him.

I was quite impressed and charmed by the story and the sincerity of the players in this production. It's really great family entertainment.

A recently orphaned boy tries to save a young bear cub from becoming a circus act,
sharkey00031 October 2000
Do not let the first 10 minutes of this movie form your opinion of it. There is a twist to the story, which I will not reveal. However it was certainly something different, and worth watching if you're in the mood for some light entertainment without burning away too many brain cells. A simple, well acted movie, which did not become too mushy despite having 2 themes to it which could have been portrayed in a very depressing manner.

Deff a kid's movie
HandsomeBen9 March 2021
This is defiantly a kid'ss movie and shouldn't be taken seriously. A boy who lost his parents goes to a circus and ends up feeling sorry for a baby bear, and recuses it.

The acting is really bad but small children will not notice how bad it is. The coordination is also bad during fight scenes. It did do a lot of things I wasn't expecting I thought it would be the ''a group of kids vs adults'' theme. But the writing is weak. This seems like it was put together by people who just wanted to cash in, and didn't respect the audience enough to give better direction to the actors. I can only see older people liking this if they grew up watching this as a kid and it reminds them of their childhood. Or is you'd rather watch something that is wholesome.

Simply terrible.
mccambridge13 October 2008
My kids did not enjoy this garbage.

Needless to say, I had a mean laugh or two at the absolutely amateurish acting and production values and the pathetic plot and dialog. This is apparently the second of a series of Grizzly Mountain movies. How do movies like this get made and how do they get distributed? And why does my wife pick them out for Family Movie Night?!

I vaguely recollect Grizzly Adams. Despite the disclaimer, this movie is a weak attempt to capitalize on the character and memories of what was undoubtedly a low quality TV series. This movie has forever sullied what dim memories I have of Grizzly Adams.

I kept thinking of the documentary "Grizzly Man" and wishing that perhaps the same fate would befall one or more of the characters in this movie--don't they realize grizzlies are dangerous and make poor pets?!

I gave it two stars because the bear cub was cute.

Beautiful fantasy - should have gotten the big screen treatment
Renaldo Matlin3 April 2003
This is truly one of the weirdest experiences of my movie-going life.

First of all I ordered it on DVD for the strangest reasons: as a kid I had fond memories of watching Dan Haggerty in the wonderful TV-show "The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams" (on English cable), and yearning for a way to see good old Dan "back in action" I searched the web to see whether any "Grizzly Adams" was available on DVD. Sadly it wasn't but in my search I came across "Escape to Grizzly Mountain" - an obvious low budget production that (it turns out) has nothing to do with the character of Grizzly Adams, despite starring Haggerty in a character very much like his famous part on TV. So, not being able to get the real thing I was so desperate to revisit my memories of Dan "Grizzly Adams" Haggerty that I ordered this movie.

In fact the movie opens with a disclaimer, informing the viewer that the character is in no relation to "Grizzly Adams". Sure, like I care. Here you have Haggerty playing a peace-, nature-, animal-loving guy living in a house in the 1841 wilderness of America, and his two best friends in the world is a big old grizzly bear and a native American! You can't come any closer than that without actually hitting the target dead on!

And then there's the rest of the story: you got veteran child actor Miko Hughes (the kid who gives Arnold the memorable line 'Boys have a penis, girls have a vagina' in 1990's "Kindergarten Cop") playing a kid who wants to save a bear cub from a circus run by a mean old lady, and through a native American working at the circus he learns of a cave that supposedly can transport people "with a pure heart" back in time. He steals the bear cub, treks of into the mountains searching for the cave and ends up in: 1841 where he meets... Dan Haggerty... TADA!!! I won't reveal much more of the story, other then saying that Haggerty in turn has to go back with him to the year 2000 (!) and naturally they have a fun little adventure before reaching their goal.

As I mentioned earlier this really is a weird experience, because the production is cheap and sadly some TERRIBLE acting does it's best to try and sink the ship. Who is that poor lady playing the mean old circus owner? My God.. Amateur hour... but let's blame the director. It is also a crying shame to see top-billed (!) Jan-Michael Vincent in a one minute appearance as a trapper. It was the first I had seen of him in years and the once great and cool actor is a tragic sight, messed up by alcohol and a hard life :(

The movie does however have it's moments: Dan Haggerty is wonderful as his lovable old self (a highlight is his reaction on seeing a motorcycle-dude speed by on a Harley). Also Miko Hughes is good (the little bloke has more acting-experience than most of the grown-ups in this production), Miles O'Keeffe (TARZAN!) is okay as a cop and Jay Tavare is great as Haggerty's 1841 indian friend. To top it all off that bear cub is A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E. No kidding, take the cutest puppy you ever saw in your life, add little goochie-goochie-goo-soundbytes, sprinkle him with sugar and you got Dudley (as the cub is named in the movie).

The best thing is still the story. Sure it's simple, but it's still the kind of fantasy that makes you all warm inside. In fact it reminded me of the kind of wonderful dreams one could have as a child, you know, the ones where you felt sad to wake up and tried to force yourself back to sleep to continue the experience.

BUT to see it all presented in such a cheap way is kind of sad. This is a story that REALLY deserved a bigger treatment, if not on the big screen perhaps the Hallmark network should have had a go at it in stead. And had it even been produced for the big screen they still should have kept Dan Haggerty, as he really is half the show. Oh well, no use in crying over spilt milk :/

Did I enjoy it? Sure, but the story deserved a better presentation. Also: youngsters should love it.

The best film about a boy saving a bear from an evil circus, ever!
Gremloid27 January 2003
This is a beautiful and moving film about a young boy who lives with his sister since his parents are dead. He has no friends and some guys bully him. One day he meets a bear cub at a circus and the friendly indian Charlie tells him about a mystical cave from where you can travel in time. Adventure begins. It's very very exiting. I strongly recommend it!

Flash back to Grizzly Adams :)
BOOBEAR6615 May 2005
Growing up in NYC Grizzly Adams was on TV at 3am. For two years I'd wake up, sneak into living room & put a blanket on the TV (floor model) and watch this show. Grizzly Adams was one of my most treasured parts of growing up, how I wanted to live just like him lol. Anyway.... This movie is not grizzly adams but the warm feeling, bear, beautiful scenery are still there & so is Dan. Any true nature lover or Grizzly Adams fan will love this film. I have looked years on ebay to get the series but no luck, this is the closetest you can get in a sense. My score 10/10, bought back the memories, warm feeling, and was just the cutest bear cub you ever seen, how I wish one day I can hug a bear cub :(

Adventure for the whole family.
rbelkie20 April 2006
Twelve-year-old Jimmy Dobson ends up with more adventure than he counted on when he makes friends with a mistreated bear cub at the circus. Charlie Yellowhorse, who works at the circus, tells Jimmy about a magic time-travel cave where he can release the bear into the ancient wilds of the past. With the help of Charlie, Jimmy frees the bear cub and heads for Grizzley Mountain. When they reach the cave, Jimmy ends up in 1870 all by himself and has to find his way back before sunset on the second day or he will be stuck in the past forever. With some help from his new friends and special people from the past, Jimmy again rescues the bear cub and sends him back to the past with his friends.

I enjoyed this movie because Family movies of quality are hard to come by these days. The acting is over-done my some (The circus owner.) and under-done by others (Dan Haggerty). Even so it is an enjoyable way to spend some Family time together.
