Cameron Diaz Hosts SNL: Watch Video of the Best and Worst Sketches

Cameron Diaz Hosts SNL: Watch Video of the Best and Worst Sketches
When a long-time A-lister with proven comedic chops like Cameron Diaz hits Studio 8H to host Saturday Night Live, expectations tend to be high. But would the Annie star’s wacky charm spin her first official hosting stint since 2005 — she’s done numerous guest spots, it must be noted — into comedy gold?

Despite a promising but eventually flat “Schoolhouse Rock”-themed cold open (highlighted by Jay Pharoah’s President Obama repeatedly throwing Kenan Thompson’s “Bill” down the Capital Hill steps) and Diaz’s less-than-stellar audience Q&A as opening monologue (“Is Shrek just as grumpy in real life?”), the

July Box Office Falls Short of $1 Billion

July Box Office Falls Short of $1 Billion
The final results are in for the month of July, and they aren't pretty.Domestic box office revenues totaled $966 million, which is down a massive 30 percent from last July. This also marks the first time since 2002 that the month of July fell short of $1 billion. The 30 percent year-to-year decline is the steepest drop in Box Office Mojo's database, which dates back to the early 1980s. The only rival is January 2011, which was off 29 percent (thanks in no small part to Avatar's impact on January 2010).What explains this historic decline? Simply put, it can be chalked up to an abnormally weak lineup of movies that weren't appealing enough to get people in to theaters. Nothing performed on par with Despicable Me 2, The Dark Knight Rises or Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, and nothing was expected to, either. Moviegoers aren't just going to show up out of habit*there

Fox is First Studio to Reach $1 Billion in 2014

Thanks to a strong debut from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, 20th Century Fox has became the first studio to pass $1 billion at the domestic box office this year. The studio crossed the $1 billion mark on Sunday, which was the 194th day of the year. The last time it took this long for a studio to get there was in 2006, when Disney hit that level in 215 days.Fox's biggest title of the year is also currently the highest-grossing movie of the Summer: through Sunday, X-Men: Days of Future Past has brought in $229.2 million at the domestic box office. While it will likely wind up below X-Men: The Last Stand ($234.4 million), it's still a hefty haul for the 14-year-old franchise.Fox has also had a big year in animation, though none of the titles performed extraordinarily. DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon 2 has brought in $152.3 million,

Which Studio Will Be First to $1 Billion This Year?

Over the weekend, Sony became the third studio to reach $500 million at the domestic box office in 2014. The other two are Disney*the current leader with $541 million*and Warner Bros. Before the end of the Summer, a few of the six big studios will reach $1 billion. The question is, which one will get there first?Dating back to 2007, at least one studio reached $1 billion by mid-July. For the past two years, it was Disney; for the five years prior to that, it was Paramount. Of course, getting there first doesn't guarantee a first place finish for the full year. Over the past decade, the first to $1 billion and the year-end leader have only lined up three times: Paramount in 2011, Paramount in 2007, and Sony in 2004.For each of the six major studios, we've outlined year-to-date box office (in descending order), looked ahead at their upcoming releases, and assigned odds of them reaching $1 billion first.
