The Other Game Show.
7 June 2008 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

This was the 'other' game show. Appearing on ITV back in the mid 1950's, it featured a presenter called Hughie Green, who had a mixed air of humour and gruffness. Much of his gruffness was expended upon a young waif called Monica Roe, who brought him the question sheets. Occasionally she was a few seconds late or back-sassed him, and generally gave the appearance of a surly servant maintaining a slight civil war with her overbearing master. Rumours surfaced that they were having an affair. This writer has no idea of their truth.

Contestants answered questions on a chosen subject and doubled their money each time they were right. If they got it wrong; they walked away with nothing. Hughie wouldn't help them at all.

Later, they got the chance to go on a 'treasure trail'. During this, they were locked in a supposedly sound-proof booth to prevent audience smart-arses yelling them the answers. They wore a headset and communicated to Hughie through that.

The program was more competitive and less fun-oriented than 'Take Your Pick' with which it was in ratings competition. But it was very popular even so.

P.S. - On the matter of Mr Green's philandering: he had an undisclosed affair with an Elaine Yates, the wife of his then producer. The result was Paula Yates, that blonde, druggie, slapper who died prematurely. But not before she had produced three daughters by ex-punk-rocker and saviour-of-humanity Sir Bob Geldof. They were Peaches, Pixie, and Fifi. Pixie is the current delectable darling of the fashionistas, whereas Fifi is a big fat blob who presently works as a receptionist at Freuds PR in Newman Street, London. Chalk & cheese from the womb.

Hughie never knew.
