For the scenes filmed in Wal-Mart, various pictures of Natalie Portman as Queen Amidala in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999) had to be removed.
Dennis Letts, who played the sheriff, was the husband of the author of the novel "Where the Heart Is," Billie Letts).
In the scene where Willy Jack Pickens (Novalee's estranged baby's father) picks up an underage hitchhiker Jolene he ask, "Where are you going"? She responds, "Anywhere but here". This is a nod to Natalie Portman previous movie Anywhere But Here.

The Walmart from the story in Sequoyah, Oklahoma, is actually the Walmart in Claremore, Oklahoma. Sequoyah is so small that the closest Walmart is in the next town.
