HEAVY ON HAND DRAMA, 10 May 1999
Author: jan onderwater from Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Heavy on hand drama about alcoholic mother splendidly played by Susanne von Borsody. It is honest and well meant, and there are sensitive scenes, but in the end the viewer has a hangover of the cliches of which there are not too few (of course she can not find a new job and then immediately starts drinking again). Von Trotta's directing is too matter-of-fact to make the viewer really involved. The script starts a lot, but does not finish much; what is the viewer expected to do with all that African stuff? As made-for-tv film average, as film only passable.
