This two-bit melodrama boasts a biblical title .But it does not delude for long. The connection with David,Bathsheba (Bethsabée)and her unfortunate husband Urie remains vague and flimsy.
A woman with a racy past ,Arabella, (Darrieux) comes to Africa to meet her fiancé (Georges Marshall),an officer .What a coincidence, among the military, there's a strange man (Paul Meurisse) who seems to know a lot of very bad things about Arabella. And guess what? The colonel's daughter is in love with this man and with Arabella it's hate at first sight. This hackneyed,old-fashioned and trite story is enhanced ,so to speak,by a bombastic, syrupy score. All the natives (Arabs) are servants or privates at best ,under white heroes'command.
Leonide Moguy 's directing-a now forgotten name- is abysmal .Three good actors are totally wasted .Adapted from a Pierre Benoit's book, whose most famous book remains "l'Atlantide".I haven't read this one,but it must be close to romance magazines stuff.Good for a laugh.Barely.
