PBS SoCal’s ‘Variety Studio: Actors on Actors’ Nabs La Area Emmy Nomination
PBS SoCal’s “Variety Studio: Actors on Actors” has earned its third consecutive Los Angeles Area Emmy Award nomination for entertainment programming.

Variety Studio: Actors on Actors” has won the category for the past two years. The franchise, which features pairings of actors from prominent movies and TV shows talking about their craft, earned a nomination this year for the “TV Actors” edition.

The nominated episode of “Actors on Actors — TV Actors” featured conversations between Lady Gaga and Jamie Lee Curtis, Courtney B. Vance and Tracee Ellis Ross, Jennifer Lopez and Felicity Huffman, Aaron Paul and Tom Hiddleston, and Emilia Clarke and Jay Duplass. “Actors on Actors” was hosted by Variety co-editor-in-chief Andrew Wallenstein, who was recognized with a nomination. Variety’s associate publisher Donna Pennestri, managing director of features and events John Ross, and executive editor of TV Debra Birnbaum also earned noms for their work in producing the series.

But these newscasters didn’t leave their sartorial decisions up to chance. There is reasoning behind every fashion choice on morning TV.

Audrey Mansfield, visual stylist appearance coach for NBC-owned stations, makes sure the look is consistent from coast to coast. “You have a brand, and it’s not just the graphics or the content,” she says. “It’s also the expectation of the visuals on the talent.”

Whether local news or on national, the expectations are the same. “The look of local news doesn’t exist anymore. Just the content is local,” says Mansfield. “The audience expects talent to look like they’re at network level, even if they don’t have the same budget or the same help.”

Variety’s Elizabeth Wagmeister Named Contributor to ‘Page Six TV’

Variety‘s Elizabeth Wagmeister has been named a contributor for “Page Six TV,” a new daily television show modeled after the New York Post’s Page Six news and gossip section.

The show hails from the Post, Endemol Shine North America and Fox Television Stations. It’s set to debut on Monday, July 18 for a three-week test run on Fox stations in top markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Dallas, Atlanta, Detroit, and Tampa Bay. The show will air in early evening and late-night slots in most of the markets.

John Fugelsang has been tapped as host of “Page Six TV,” while Mario Cantone (“The View,” “Sex and the City”), Bevy Smith (Bravo’s “Fashion Queens”) and New York Post Page Six reporter Carlos Greer serve as contributors alongside Wagmeister, a Los Angeles-based TV reporter for Variety. ‘Variety Studio: Actors on Actors’ Nabs Los Angeles Area Emmy Award Nomination
PBS SoCal’s “Variety Studio: Actors on Actors” series has nabbed its second consecutive nomination for a Los Angeles Area Emmy Award.

The series that features notable actors in conversations about their craft is a contender in the entertainment programming category. “Variety Studio: Actors on Actors” won the trophy last year on its first nomination.

Hosted by Variety‘s Jenelle Riley, the 2015 edition featured such pairings as Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan, Amy Schumer and Lily Tomlin, Brie Larson and Joel Edgerton, Steve Carell and Rooney Mara and Bryan Cranston and Jason Segel.

Also nommed in the category is Kcbs/Kcal’s “Nx Soundstage” series and Ktla’s “Parade Countdown” telecast.

Univision’s Kmex and NBC’s Knbc lead the field in the 68th annual L.A. Emmy Awards derby overall with a total of 19 nominations apiece. Kcet grabbed 13 while Ktla and Telemundo’s Kvea each garnered 10.

Univision’s Kmex Leads L.A. Area Emmy Nominations

Univision’s flagship Kmex-tv leads the list of stations vying for the 66th annual Los Angeles area Emmy Awards.

Kmex landed 20 noms, including bids for hard news reporting (for reporter Antonio Valverde), investigative reporting (for reporter Leon Krauze) and reporting on crime/social issues. Knbc-tv was second with 16 mentions, followed by Ktla (14), Kabc (13) and Telemundo’s Kvea (10). Time Warner Cable Deportes was the top cabler with 9 noms, tied with indie pubcaster Kcet.

Kmex is a contender in two of the top newscast races, for morning newscast (airing between 4 a.m.-11 a.m.), and daytime newscast (11 a.m.-7 p.m.). There are no nominations in the top three newscast categories, which include the category of late newscasts (7 p.m.-midnight); all stations that choose to enter in any of the three categories are considered in the final judging.
