Steven Soderbergh to release his first horror movie, Unsane

Tony Sokol Nov 15, 2017

Modern technology and secret shoots drive Steven Sodenbergh’s first foray into horror with upcoming thriller Unsane.

Steven Soderbergh loves his new iPhone so much he shot a whole movie on it. The director of Traffic, Erin Brockovich, Ocean’s Eleven and Side Effects will self-distribute his first horror movie Unsane through his Fingerprint Releasing via Bleecker Street, the same team that brought his crime drama Logan Lucky to cinemas earlier this year. The screenplay was witten by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer.

Unsane tells the story of a young woman who “is involuntarily committed to a mental institution where she is confronted by her greatest fear — but is it real or is it a product of her delusion?”

Unsane stars Claire Foy, Joshua Leonard, Juno Temple, Aimee Mullins, Amy Irving, and Jay Pharoah, who described the film as a "reality-horror type" of movie, similar to Jordan Peele’s Get Out.

Review: ‘Wonder’ is a Sweet, Delicate Drama that Sidesteps Clichés

Based on the popular book by R. J. Palacio, Stephen Chbosky’s Wonder is a sweet, delicate, self-aware adaptation that remarkably sidesteps most of the clichés that a film such as this could have easily fallen into. It is the universality of the message that rings most true in Chbosky’s film: accepting people for who they are and, most importantly, being kind to one another. It might sound all saccharine, but it is deftly told by a filmmaker whose last film (an adaptation of his own novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower) also dealt with adolescent angst.

Although it will remind some of Peter Bogdonavich’s excellent Mask, in which a boy also had to deal with a craniofacial birth defect, Wonder separates itself by being its own kind of sweet-natured fable. If Bogdanovich’s film was a grittier, more morose-filled drama, Chbosky does not want any of

Starting out with her iconic line from Notting Hill, she went on to act out scenes from Runaway Bride, Steel Magnolias, Charlie Wilson’s War, Mystic Pizza, Pretty Woman, Hook, Erin Brockovich, The Pelican Brief, and Sleeping With the Enemy.

When it came time to act out Oceans 11 and 12, Corden stepped out in an interesting outfit.

“What are you doing?” Roberts asked him.

“I’m being George Clooney! I’ve got coffee, tequila, a couple of these,” he said, knocking together some twin baby dolls.

Telluride: ‘Wonderstruck’ Lenser Ed Lachman Reflects on His Career

Telluride: ‘Wonderstruck’ Lenser Ed Lachman Reflects on His Career
The Telluride Film Festival has held tributes for but a handful cinematographers over the last 44 years. The names are titans of the form: Karl Struss (“Sunrise,” “The Great Dictator”), Sven Nykvist (“Cries & Whispers,” “Fanny and Alexander”), John Alton (“An American in Paris,” “Elmer Gantry”), Vittorio Storaro (“Apocalypse Now,” “The Last Emperor”). This year, on the heels of a lifetime achievement prize from the American Society of Cinematographers earlier this year, Ed Lachman joins their ranks.

Oscar-nominated for “Far From Heaven” and “Carol,” Lachman is a frequent collaborator of director Todd Haynes. This year’s celebration of his work is pegged to their latest, “Wonderstruck,” which is part of the festival’s main program. But Lachman’s career outstretches those three movies alone, from working with icons of pop (Madonna) and humanitarianism (Mother Teresa), to collaborations with artists at the beginning (Sofia Coppola) and end (Robert Altman) of their careers.

Lachman spoke to Variety about his career to

Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder Reunite for Destination Wedding

Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder Reunite for Destination Wedding
It's the reunion we've waited a lifetime for. Well, not really. The usually stellar Keanu Reeves and the always welcome Wynona Ryder first appeared together in one of Revees' most critically derided and divisive movies. One his most hardcore fans find hard to defend. Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula. Now, the pair are ready to give the world another taste of their unique chemistry, and it allows both actors to return to a genre they long ago abandoned, the romantic comedy. This is actually pretty exciting.

Keanu Reeves (The Matrix trilogy, John Wick, John Wick: Chapter Two) and Academy Award Nominee and Golden Globe Winner Winona Ryder (Girl Interrupted, Stranger Things) will star in Victor Levin's (5 to 7) comedy Destination Wedding, from Levin's original script. Sunshine Pictures' Gail Lyon is producing with Two Camel Films' Elizabeth Dell. Robert Jones is producing for The Fyzz Facility, which is fully financing the film.

Keanu Reeves (The Matrix trilogy, John Wick, John Wick: Chapter Two) and Academy Award® Nominee and Golden Globe® Winner Winona Ryder (Girl Interrupted, Stranger Things) will star in Victor Levin’s (5 to 7) comedy Destination Wedding, from Levin’s original script. Elevated’s Cassian Elwes and The Fyzz Facility’s Wayne Marc Godfrey are executive producing. Principal photography recently wrapped in central California.

Destination Wedding tells the story of two miserable and unpleasant wedding guests, both pariahs at this affair, who develop a mutual affection despite themselves. But to act on those feelings would be to trust hope over experience, a foolish choice indeed.

Destination Wedding sees Reeves and Ryder renew a fan-favorite on-screen partnership that began with

Doug Liman interview: American Made, Tom Cruise, being a rebel

Ryan Lambie Aug 24, 2017

Doug Liman on Swingers, getting arrested, American Made, Bourne and much more...

It was only a couple of weeks ago that we last spoke to Doug Liman, who in July was promoting his compact, $3 million war thriller The Wall. Now, he's back with another thriller, this one taking place over a much broader canvas. American Made tells the story of Barry Seal, a pilot who wound up running missions in and out of Central America for the CIA; taking covert photographs and smuggling in guns.

No, Steven Soderbergh's 'Logan Lucky' Didn't Change the Film Business
Steven Soderbergh made headlines in 2011 when declaring he was retiring from filmmaking after an enviable two-decade run that began with his first feature, Sex, Lies and Videotape (1989), which helped spark the indie film revolution of the 1990s and in turn made Soderbergh the darling of the mainstream Hollywood studio system.

His "retirement" didn't last long. Soderbergh, who has directed such studio blockbusters as Erin Brockovich and the Ocean's 11 franchise, is now back in the trenches with Logan Lucky, a star-studded heist film starring Channing Tatum, Adam Driver and Daniel Craig that he made independently with the specific intention of...
