If you like some music to go along with your movies, today is your treat. First up, Jack White of the now defunct White Stripes, who just released his solo album, has signed on to write, produce and perform his own original score for Disney’s big blockbuster The Lone Ranger. Despite his music being featured in a number of films and many filmmakers, including Michel Gondry, crafting his music videos, this will be his first foray into scoring a feature film. Look (and listen) for Gore Verbinski‘s film, starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer, in about a year when it arrives on May 31st, 2013.
We’ve also got news that electronica artist Moby will be lending his hand to Fredrik Bond‘s feature debut, The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman, starring Shia Labeouf, Melissa Leo and Til Schweiger. The film revolves around a young man named Charlie Countryman »

Steven Soderbergh has long made a habit of keeping a wide-ranging roster of regular collaborators to turn to, depending on the needs of whatever project he's working on. And with the cameras now rolling on his next effort "The Bitter Pill" he's taking a step away from the electronic-driven scores by Cliff Martinez and David Holmes of his last two films "Contagion" and "Haywire."
Sources close to the project have confirmed with The Playlist that ten-time Oscar nominee Thomas Newman will be scoring the upcoming thriller. It seems that Newman and Soderbergh have made an unofficial pact to work together every six years, first pairing up in 2000 for "Erin Brockovich" and again in 2006 for "The Good German" (with Newman earning an Ocar nod for his work). This time around he'll cue the strings for the film which stars Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Vinessa Shaw in »

The "Magic Mike" trailer has finally arrived online, meaning this is the best day of your week. Unless the idea of Channing Tatum starring in a movie about male stripping for director Steven Soderbergh is not something you think sounds awesome.
Soderbergh. The same Oscar-winning director behind "Traffic," "Erin Brockovich," the "Ocean's 11" franchise and January's action film "Haywire," directing what looks like a straight-up goof of summer entertainment. With Tatum -- the breakout star of 2012, who should actually get Supporting Actor buzz for his "21 Jump Street" role (truth) -- seemingly giving another hilariously self-aware and layered performance.
Deep breaths: "Magic Mike," which is partially based on Tatum's time as a dancer, follows a male stripper with the stage name of Magic Mike, as he tries to navigate life and love. Alex Pettyfer co-stars as the young buck who Mike takes under his wing, while Cody Horn plays Mike's new »

Danny DeVito has had a successful career both in front of the camera and behind it. Now, at 67, he is preparing for his first West End run in The Sunshine Boys – and shows no sign of slowing down
The first thing you notice about the actor, director and producer Danny DeVito is that, as has been exhaustively documented, getting on for a zillion times, he's short (five foot nothing) and round, like a human Teletubby. Albeit a 67-year-old Teletubby, with white wisps of hair around his ears, which he pulls at constantly.
The second thing you notice is how animated and expressive he is. It's not a cartoon version of DeVito's native Italian-American, but it's at the turbo end of vibrant. In the rehearsal space where we meet, he's constantly shrugging, gesturing with his hands, laughing so that his glasses fall off his forehead over his eyes; at one point, »

With the arrival of the auteur theory, filmmakers like Michael Curtiz no longer get as much sway among the current generation of directors. Curtiz (born Kertész Kaminer Manó in Hungary in 1886), was a journeyman, a man who flourished in the studio system after being picked out by Jack Warner for his Austrian Biblical epic "Moon of Israel" in 1924. He stayed at the studio for nearly 20 years, taking on whatever he was assigned at a terrifyingly prolific rate -- he made over 100 Hollywood movies up to "The Comancheros" in 1961. And some of them are terrible, as you might expect.
But Curtiz was also responsible for some of the greatest films of the era, and those who diminish his abilities (including the director himself, who once said "Who cares about character? I make it go so fast nobody notices") are ignoring his enormous skill behind the camera, and his undeniable capacity for »

Harvey Keitel and Matthew Guinness in The Duellists
Photo: Paramount Pictures With all the excitement surrounding Ridley Scott's upcoming film Prometheus marking the director's much anticipated return to the world of Alien, which he brought to life back in 1979, I've heard many people reference Scott's 1977 directorial debut, The Duellists. Strangely I've heard it mentioned not only because Scott has a new film coming out, but I've read it mentioned in articles discussing its accomplished cinematic swordplay. My interest was piqued and I took to Netflix. Based on Joseph Conrad's 1908 short story "The Duel" (download it for free here), which itself is based on a true story, The Duelists centers on Armand d'Hubert (Keith Carradine) and Gabriel Feraud (Harvey Keitel), a pair of officers in Napoleon's army. The film begins with Feraud in a duel with a man we'll later learn is the nephew of the Mayor of Strasbourg. »

Building off an article at The Atlantic, Sasha Stone at Awards Daily has written a post headlined "Might The Hunger Games be the First Best Picture Contender of the Year?" Without delay or second thought I'll just say "no." That said, I'm not even sure Sasha thinks there's much of a chance as she leaves plenty of outs within the article essentially saying it's too early to tell, none of us know what will be "best" by the end of the year and as a result, why not The Hunger Games? Fair enough, it's fun to think of "what ifs" so I'll play along, only I'm not considering the film for a second just as I didn't last year when people started banging the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 drum last July. Just not going to happen. Sasha's reasons for considering the film (outside of saying it's »

After starring in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Rooney Mara managed to land a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her performance in the violent film adaptation of a cult-smash novel. Can Jennifer Lawrence do the same with The Hunger Games? At this point we have no real idea of what her potential competition could be, but I’d say it’s not out of the question. After all, Lawrence has already caught the Academy’s eye thanks to her breakout turn in the 2010 Sundance hit Winter’s Bone. And The Hunger Games has become an instant hit with both audiences and critics. »
