Michel Hafner (9 May 2001):
Erin Brockovich (2000) on DVD looks ok. Not more.
The film master used is in good shape, clean and steady.
Color and contrast rendition are good.
Sharpness is somewhat disappointing.
The noise and grain level is pretty high for a brand new film. It has been reduced with digital noise suppression. Its artifacts are visible most of the time. Fine image detail is often jittery and messed up when in motion. There is also some aliasing and some edge enhancement evident.
Compression is ok.
This DVD is somewhat disappointing for an oscar caliber movie like that. While there are no crass problems watching the film on high quality equipment reveals many small flaws that add up to a less than thrilling experience.
The sound level is ludicrously low, wasting digital resolution for no reason than following a stupid standard.
