Storyline

Four students in Shanghai have recently finished university. All are unemployed. Xu contemplates suicide but his friend Zhao talks him out of it. Zhao lives in a shabby room with just a flimsy wall of planks separating him from the room behind. Miss Yang, in town to take a factory job, moves in behind. Her nails into the wall knock Zhao's photos down. The unseen neighbours start playing tit for tat... Zhao gets a job as proofreader at a newspaper. He sees that pretty girl on the tram to work every day. He doesn't know her, but it's Miss Yang... Zhao is assigned to cover labour conditions for the paper. He is sent to a factory, the one where Miss Yang works... Written by David Carless

Delightful

This film was made in 1937, and its age shows. But never mind. The story, although it has its dark moments, is mostly centered around the wonderfully expressive performances of Zhao Dan as Zhao and Bai Yang as the fresh-faced female tenant that Zhao gets into a feud with. The feud between the two is lighthearted and funny, while the romantic elements at the tram also works like a charm. The film clearly has its dark elements (the widespread unemployment in China in the late 1930s), where many people, including graduates cannot find a job. But it is adroitly balanced by its comedy (the Zhao and Bai duo) and the excellent acting. Lovers of Chinese cinema will remember Bai Yang as the female lead in 1947's "The Spring River flows East". "Crossroads" is not really a heavy film, but its heart-tugging romance and theme of job-finding will strike a chord in many modern viewers as well.
