Underrated Early '80s Porn

This was one of my favorites when I first rented it back in 1987. I was 21 years old and exploring at the time. Annette Haven plays a Chinese guru who counsels millionaire playboy Richard Pacheco about the meaning of fulfillment. I'm sure it seemed racist to cast an Anglo in the role of an Asian, especially when there were plenty of Asian porn stars. That quibble aside, Carol Doda charmingly rounds out the cast with an all-too-brief softcore scene. I'd've liked more of her, but I also loved Georgina Spelvin in nothing but a pair of high-heel slides when she seduces Pacheco.

Wall-to-wall sex isn't always what it's cracked up to be, but this film keeps it short and lightly sprinkled throughout the movie so it maintains interest. A smart directorial move.

In these days of shot-on videos, Madame Lau is a nostalgic breath of fresh air from the days of adult movies on film. Somehow, film has more class, and looks less cheap than video.

I have to admit that while the movie's main plot is resolved, nothing else is. What happens to Carol Doda at the end? And what happens to the woman going down on Pacheco during the opening credits? She seems to just vanish from the proceedings, never to be heard from again. Still, Madame Lau holds up quite well.
