Star Wars fans have been abuzz this week about a potentially big new mystery project in the works dealing with that galaxy far, far away.
It all started when tech site Fusible reported that Lucasfilm had registered Internet domains based on permutations of “Star Wars 1313.” That may not seem revealing in and of itself, but fans first got whiff of a traveling museum exhibit called Star Wars: Identities when Lucasfilm registered that particular domain. The acclaimed illustrator and Academy Award-winning conceptual artist Ralph McQuarrie passed away on Saturday at his home in Berkeley, California, aged 82. A name that will be instantly familiar to Star Wars fans, McQuarrie was one of the most influential figures in science fiction and fantasy art and his visionary illustrations were key to defining the look of George Lucas' galaxy far, far away.
Born in Gary, Indiana in 1929, McQuarrie moved to California during the 1960s where he gained work as a technical illustrator for Boeing before shifting into the field of film and TV, designing movie posters and working on the animation for CBS News' Apollo space program coverage before coming to the attention of George Lucas, who then commissioned McQuarrie for design work on his space opera, Star Wars. First we were treated to dogs barking the Imperial March in a teaser for Volkswagen's Super Bowl Xlvi TV spot, airing February 5th during the big game. Now we've learned that next Sunday's anticipated Star Wars themed ad will take place inside the infamous Mos Eisley Cantina, and its storyline will revolve around that most famous Snivvian of all, Snaggletooth. Volkswagen has released a teaser image with this popular alien at the forefront. Check out the return of Snaggletooth in the photo below (hopefully this will do more for his career than The Star Wars Holiday Special and his notorious dance with Maude's Bea Arthur ever did).
