I was really looking forward to seeing more of the early Bruce Lee films after watching THE KID. Unfortunately, THE GUIDING LIGHT (like THE KID) doesn't focus solely on Lee himself. The first third of the film, while ostensibly about his character, features a younger kid in the part- a kid whose tendency to look toward the camera and the behind-the-scenes personnel is distracting, to say the least. (It's not as bad as, say, the little girl in THE LAST MAN ON EARTH, who bemoans her lack of sight while casually looking around the room, but it's distracting to see, nonetheless.) (So to speak.) When the young Bruce Lee enters, the movie picks up- in part because Lee was, even at a young age, a charismatic performer whose mere presence demanded the viewer's attention. Here, the story reminds one of Charlie Chaplin's CITY LIGHTS (though without the humor)- but Lee is replaced, as the story progresses (in time), by an older actor. As with THE KID, I think the film would've benefited a great deal from more Lee and less anybody else.
