I only picked up this movie because it had Melissa Leo, who I very much enjoyed in Frozen River. This movie is about an older woman (Leo) and a younger man who travel across the country. While it sounds like a worn out story-- an odd couple making a road trip, it comes off as very original. The two main characters' interactions with both each other and other characters are very believable. Penn from Penn and Teller also plays a sizable role. He steps out of his usual comfort zone and plays a comic lead. The movie is interesting and enjoyable. The beginning is very weird, and I'm not sure what a lot of the symbolism meant. It definitely gave me a lot to think about, and is an enjoyable movie. It had a few flaws, but there was always so much going on that I could find something good in every scene. I was surprised to see that the director of this film also directed the old movie "Deadly Art of Survival." The two are very different movies. However, director Charlie Ahearn is an underrated creative genius, and that is once again clear with Fear of Fiction. I think the DVD is coming out soon. I was lucky to catch it at a screening a few months ago.
