Storyline

Sgt. Cannon (Tommy Cannon) and PC Ball (Bobby Ball) run the police station in the quiet town of Little Botham. When the station is threatened with closure due to a lack of crime, they decide to invent some crimes to justify their existence. When they try to steal a painting from a local rich businessman (Roy Kinnear), they accidently stumble across a gang of real art thieves who have just stolen £1 million worth of paintings. It is up to the two bungling cops to stop them escaping with their haul. Written by measham

Trivia

Two of the credited writers on the film were both first named "Sidney". They were Sidney Gilliat, an originator of the original screenplay for Ask a Policeman (1939) with Val Guest, this remake's director, who was also billed for this remake's screenplay, and Sidney Green, billed as Sid Green, for additional material. Moreover, another "Sidney", making three Sidneys all up writing for this picture, Sid Colin, wrote for The Boys in Blue (1984) as well, but was uncredited. See more »

This is underrated!!
12 March 2002 | by (Manchester,england) – See all my reviews

I'm sorry but I have to say that this film fills me with so much joy! 20 years ago i watched this film as an innocent, now, whenever this cynical and weary mind needs to remember how good life is, i watch the boys in blue and all is well with the world. Its funny, its slapstick, its cannon and ball! God bless you Tommy Cannon and Bobby Ball. I, for one, salute you
