To her detriment, Susan Scott falls in love with an unsettled younger man
20 December 2012 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

The main character is Anna, played by Susan Scott/Nieves Navarro. She's an assistant to the well-off businessman Gary Merrill and his kept mistress. She also does socializing on his behalf with clients. Merrill's daughter has a poor student as her boyfriend (Gianni Macchia) whom she aims to marry. He's your typical anti-capitalist leftist in the European 70s. Gianni and Nieves hit it off. The daughter fumes but plays a waiting game, knowing that her combination of sex and money will win Gianni eventually. Nieves falls much harder than does Gianni, who comes off as flighty and unsettled.

The picture wanders around a good deal, focusing on the social mores of the Merrill class and those of the students, before it settles down into its real focus, which is in its title "A Wrong Way to Love". It's really a love of Anna's that faces obstacles. Navarro inhabits the role fully and we feel for her. Gianni nicely portrays the young man who is none too likable, and both Merrill and his daughter (Micaela Pignatelli) handle the upper class roles effectively. Gianni swings toward the money while Navarro, left stranded, swings into a downward arc. Yet this love is not entirely extinguished despite Gianni's marriage. There is left open a more than distinct possibility that he will take Anna as a mistress now that his wife has gotten her husband.

The theme is basically a cynical look at how love as a force wilts or gives way before other stronger forces, and in how love and marriage do NOT go together like a horse and carriage. In the Italian world, there is room for a mistress too.

I will remember from this movie the two performances of the female leads competing for Gianni. They stood out, and especially Navarro's. She so completely falls for Gianni and gives herself in trust to him that we feel for her when it doesn't work out.
