The name of the title is actually Shan Bei Da Sao, instead of the Shan Bei Da Shao, and the exact literal translation of the title is: the Sister-in-law of Northern Shannxi (Province).
This movie is an accurate portrait of the lower class. Shannxi Province in the northwestern part of China was under developed and rather poor in comparison to the southeastern coastal regions of China, and many of its residents migrate to the richer regions in search of better opportunities. This movie describes their struggle, sorrow, tear, joy, and eventually, the tiny success (not necessarily in financial aspect, but also in social aspect, such as earning the little respect from the local residents of the richer region, who often discriminated against these migrate workers from the poor regions).
One thing this film deserves a credit is that although the story is fake, identical events happens frequently in real life and this movie created huge echoes not only among those migrant workers, but also among the local residents of richer regions.
