-This game keeps score, though the points aren't used for anything.

-When hit, Mega Man is temporary invulnerable. However unlike later games, this invulnerability does not include spikes.

-No energy tanks, these were introduced in Mega Man 2.

-No passwords, or any way to save the game. However, later ports of the game (Wily Wars, Anniversary Collection, Complete Works, etc.) include ways to save.

-The Sniper Joe foe appears here, but he is green, fires faster shots, and gives chase if you try to jump over him.

-Many foes appear that do not appear in later NES games (though this is true of most of the NES games to some extent.)

-The Dr. Wily stage is only 4 levels long, and there is no exterior Skull Castle view between levels.

-You can revisit beaten stages and re-fight the Robot Master if you wish to. In most later NES games you can revisit the stages, but the Robot Master will be gone when you get there.

-No screens telling you what weapon you got from a boss. In fact, the weapons are never referred to by name in the game.

-There are no non-weapon items for use, aside from the Magnet Beam. All later games have 2 or more non-weapon "assist" items like this.

-The layout of the villain select screen is different, and there are only six robots, all the others had eight.

-There's a pause right before Mega Man explodes due to running out of energy.
