Steven Spielberg: World War II Revisionist

23 December 2010 4:03 PM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

With the acclaimed mini-series The Pacific released this year, Santosh Sandhu presents an updated look at the influence of World War II on filmmaker Steven Spielberg's body of work...

Steven Spielberg’s father was a pilot in World War II and his stories formed a strong part in his son’s upbringing. Spielberg began making movies at the age of 15 and even at this young age his films Fighter Squad (1959) and Escape to Nowhere (1962) used World War II as a backdrop. It seemed inevitable that when Spielberg became a major Hollywood player he would make films about this war. Despite coming from the Vietnam generation, Spielberg has constantly revisited World War II throughout his career.

Having suffered anti-Semitism as a teenager, Spielberg sympathised with the civil rights movement but never felt comfortable with his own generation. He had little time for the counter-cultural movement of the late 1960s. With regard to filmmaking, »

Damian Lewis, Laura Fraser & David Harewood Join ‘Homeland’ Cast

22 December 2010 4:55 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Showtime’s 24-esque domestic terror drama, Homeland, is fleshing out its cast in preparation for initial shooting in January. In addition to Mandy Patinkin and Claire Danes, Damian Lewis has been cast as the fugitive/terrorist Scott Brody. Laura Frasier will play his wife Jessica and David Harewood also joins the cast cast as the Deputy Director of the CIA.

Homeland will follow Sgt. Scott Brody (Lewis), a Marine who returns home after years of being held hostage by terrorists in Iraq. The soldier immediately becomes the subject of a CIA investigation, under suspicion of colluding with his former captors. Lewis’ previous work on Band of Brothers makes him an ideal choice for the role.

Laura Frasier, best known to Screen Rant readers as the female armorer from A Knight’s Tale, plays his wife Jessica ...

Christian Bale Goes To Zhang's "Nanjing"

22 December 2010 7:05 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Christian Bale is set to star in "Hero" filmmaker Zhang Yimou's upcoming epic "Nanjing Heroes" says The Hollywood Reporter.

The story deals with the famed Nanjing Massacre when Japanese troops killed thousands of Chinese citizens in what was then the nation's capital in 1937. There have been various films about the subject matter lately, most about German businessman John Rabe who helped save hundreds of Chinese refugees.

Bale isn't playing Rabe, rather an American priest called John who helps a great number of Chinese escape certain death. The film will be shot about 40% in English and the rest in Mandarin Chinese.

Yan and Liu Heng penned the script while Zhang Weiping will produce. Dark Side FX ("Rambo," "Band of Brothers") will be handling the visual effects with the help of a $90 million budget said to be on par with John Woo's "Red Cliff".

Project Arbiter: The Indie Sci-Fi Movie That Should Be In Theaters Now!

22 December 2010 4:11 AM, PST | ScifiMafia | See recent ScifiMafia news »

I received an email the other day from David Bettencourt, the Co-Producer of an Indie Sci-Fi film called Project Arbiter, directed by Michael Chance. I’m quite thankful that I checked it out because it’s right up my alley… at the same time, I’m pretty bummed that a studio isn’t backing up a Brinks truck to this production and funding it for an all-out, full length, theatrical release of this film. Yes, it’s that good!

Anyone who knows me, is already aware that I’m a huge supporter of Indie Sci-Fi but, the folks putting together Project Arbiter are creating a hybrid of the two things that I’ve always had great interest in – Sci-Fi and World War II. When I first watched the trailer, I was completely blown the f#@k away. This short film has the visual elements of Band of Brothers, District 9 and Halo, »

TV Top 10 of 2010: The best 10 overall shows

20 December 2010 5:43 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

It's a tradition that critics of all stripes end each calendar year with Top 10 lists. 10 is a nice round number, and a seemingly easy way to separate the best from the rest, but it's a number I've always struggled with. In all the years I've been writing about television, I almost always had to find a way to cheat the confines of 10, whether through ties (often but not always involving thematically-similar shows), more nebulous groupings (in 2001, my #2 entry was "Fact-based movies and miniseries," a particularly shameless canard that allowed me to squeeze "Band of Brothers," "Boycott," »

DVD & Blu-ray box sets

17 December 2010 4:07 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The DVD/Blu-ray box set of the year has to be the Alien Collection (20th Century Fox), due in no small part to the fact that it'll probably take you a year to get through all the incredible extras and alternate edits. The Back To The Future Trilogy (Universal) comes a close second in terms of quality and value. The great Battle Royale (Arrow) is available as a box set, with two versions on Blu-ray, plus a DVD of extras and three booklets (including a comic). The BFI has two particularly good box sets in the shape of the Kurosawa Samurai Collection, which contains five films that you really should have already seen by now – Seven Samurai, The Hidden Fortress, Throne Of Blood, Yojimbo and Throne Of Blood – and the amazing Shadows Of Progress, a four-disc history of postwar British documentary films. The Notable Films of 2011: Part One

Back for its third year (see the 2010 edition) and bigger than ever, today kicks off the first in a fifteen-part look at the various cinematic releases hitting the U.S. in 2011. Each 'part' contains brief descriptions and editorial opinion/analysis of varying length covering twenty films. Expect the remaining ones to go up between now and the first major releases in mid-January.

Like all cinematic lists set within a timeframe, there's some overlap. Some films here have already opened worldwide but have yet to hit the U.S., some upcoming films you'd expect to be here aren't because they're either still in development or have already announced 2012 release dates, some were on last year's list but got delayed so have been included again (but with all new analysis).

I confined my list to films that have either set 2011 release dates or had begun/completed production, and only films that have »
