David Schwimmer Looks To The Future

9 October 2001 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actor David Schwimmer has confirmed that the eighth season of hit comedy Friends will be the last. Despite earning a whopping $650,000 an episode, David believes that the time has come to move on from loveable Ross Geller and the show which has nurtured his directing talents. David explains, "This is the last year. We've all decided that. I'll also be directing five more episodes in this final season. I need growth and challenge in my work and to feel like I'm being stretched as much as possible, or I get bored." Looking to the future, David says, "Hopefully, after Friends there'll be more projects such as Band Of Brothers. And definitely more directing." »

Spielberg And Hanks Epic Too 'Niche' For Mainstream

16 August 2001 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Steven Spielberg's war epic Band Of Brothers will be broadcast on alternative British channel BBC2 because its too "niche." TV controllers at British Broadcasting Corporation decided not to show it on mainstream channel BBC1, despite being the most expensive television drama ever made - it cost $104 million - and its famous cast of Tom Hanks, David Schwimmer and Donnie Wahlberg. The World War II movie, written by Hanks and author Steven Ambrose, was originally bought by Peter Salmon, the predecessor of current BBC1 controller Lorraine Heggessey, for $9.1 million. Speaking on Tuesday, Heggessey explained, "It's relatively niche and I'm running a mainstream channel. We felt it would be better suited to BBC2." The miniseries will run on pay cable channel HBO in the U.S. »

Hanks Thrilled To Be On Utah Beach For Film Premiere

7 June 2001 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Tom Hanks had a meaningful premiere when his war project was celebrated - on the D-Day anniversary, close to where the historic Utah Beach landings took place. Hanks is the executive producer of Band Of Brothers, a 10-hour TV series which looks at the D-Day landings - and showing it for the first time to veterans and their families on the soil of World War II's greatest battle was an amazing experience. Speaking from Utah Beach, the Saving Private Ryan star says, "It's amazing to be on this sacred ground with the actual guys who did what they did. I've been talking to participants in history and this is a once in a lifetime experience for me." Hanks claims the personal relationships he and his cast, including Donnie Wahlberg and David Schwimmer, set up with the veterans made the movie making experience extra special. He adds, "The great thing about the movie is it's created out of some eye witness accounts from people who saw everything. We wanted the cast to have these personal relationships. I remember Don Wahlberg calling his character before shooting a big scene and asking for advice and that advice made his part all the more believable." »
