Returning to the form of feature-length documentary to chronicle a subculture and the people that take pleasure in it, Brent Hodge’s third feature The Pistol Shrimps follows a recreational basketball team with a starting line-up that includes comediennes Aubrey Plaza and Molly Hawkey. The Shrimps, started as an impromptu team, inspired the league to grow into something somewhat serious — the team is even required to hold practices now. Oddly the team and the league inspire a podcast (Pistol Shrimp Radio) hosted by Matt Gourley and Mark McConville mixing alt comedy, geeky fandom and sports talk radio as the men become experts on all things Pistol Shrimps. This of course requires more energy, dedication and mental bandwidth than most men would have and, although they’re not the focus, their passion is reminiscent of the men that love My Little Pony, the subject of Hodge’s first feature A Brony Tale. »

Last year, The CW ordered a pilot for a rebooted Tales From the Darkside show, with author Joe Hill writing and executive producing the new take on George A. Romero’s beloved 1980s anthology series. A few months later, the network passed on the project, but Joe Hill is now re-teaming with Locke & Key artist Gabriel Rodríguez and Idw Publishing for a four-issue Tales From the Darkside comic book series.
The modern day-set Tales from the Darkside comic book series debuts this June and will feature standalone stories that are ultimately linked together in one all-encompassing arc. Rather than adapt specific episodes of the TV show, the comic books will instead be inspired by their source material and will have a meta vibe as well.
The comics are written by Hill and brought to life on the paneled page by artist Rodríguez, who previously worked with Hill on the acclaimed »

After last year’s rather excellent comic book series of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency from Chris Ryall and Co., my initial opening fears from 2015 are gone. I know that the team behind the comic can deliver work that pleases any bitter Douglas Adams fan so I’m going in happy. Though there is the hint of “The Second Album” itch in the back of my skull with this new series written by Arvind Ethan David. From the start it doesn’t bode well, as on the first page I’m met with artwork that should be in the pages of My Little Pony and dread strikes me ridged, until my eyes pick something out in the foreground, ‘Is that the Fourth Doctor playing Uno with Marvin the Paranoid Android!?’
The My Little Pony artwork is soon destroyed, »
Hasbro’s attempts to turn its toys into movies have yielded mixed results. For every Transformers, there’s a Battleship — or worse, a Monopoly, which still hasn’t managed to pass Go despite years of efforts. But there’s a lot riding on My Little Pony, based on one of the hottest properties in its stable. So Hasbro and Lionsgate have […]

If we were to be invited to the premiere of Zoolander 2, you better believe we're coming dressed to impress, making a statement with whatever outfit we rock and doing it with our faces of blue steel. And this is exactly why Miles Robbins is our favorite human right now. Keeping the film's eccentric fashion in mind, Susan Sarandon's son showed up on the red carpet of the New York City premiere on Tuesday, wearing an ensemble we're positive would have sent even Derek Zoolander himself into a beautiful fit of envious tears. Robbins donned a baby blue blazer with My Little Pony heads and random stuffed animal body parts sewn about it. He accessorized the look with an unbuttoned shirt underneath, »
Two of the largest toy compaies in the world, Hasbro and Mattel, are reportedly in talks to possibly merge according to Bloomberg Business.
Hasbro approached Mattel about a potential transaction late last year, and the companies have held on-and-off-again talks about a deal. Details of how a transaction might be structured isn't known at this point, and the talks may not lead to a deal, but the talk is enough to get people wondering how this will impact their film properties.
Both companies make action figures, dolls and playsets for many major film releases. They also own major IPs with Hasbro having its own studio development division behind the "Transformers" and "G.I. Joe" franchises and has films such as "Hungry Hungry Hippos," "My Little Pony," "Monopoly," "Magic: The Gathering," "Play-Doh" and "Dungeons & Dragons" in the works.
Mattel meanwhile is currently in talks with McG to adapt "He-Man and Masters »

Dating on sitcoms like Mom is always awkward; how does a television show get an audience to invest in a relationship that only lasts for 22 minutes – or at best, a few hours? For decades, comedies have struggled to make relationships between main characters and strangers meaningful in the short-term, in turn making it hard for the audience to know whether a particular story was worth investing in. With characters like Sam Malone, it was pretty easy to tell; by comparison, however, Frasier’s lack of a lead romantic interest for its protagonist made the task a lot harder for writers. Mom‘s

Last night at the Golden Globes, Sylvester Stallone won Best Supporting Actor for his performance as the iconic Rocky Balboa in Creed, with many awards season analysts believing he may take home the Oscar next month. During the ceremony last night, Variety spoke with MGM CEO Gary Barber, who revealed that he plans on releasing the sequel Creed 2 in November 2017. While he wouldn't give an exact release date, that would put the sequel in theaters almost exactly two years after the original Creed debuted.
The CEO added that the release date isn't set in stone yet, but he says it's his "goal" to roll out the follow-up in November 2017. As of now, the November 2017 release schedule already has a number of high-profile titles. Thor: Ragnarok and My Little Pony are currently scheduled to open on November 3, 2017, with the Murder on the Orient Express remake set for November 10, 2017. Justice League Part 1 and Dr. »
