Chinese opera on screen
Leofwine_draca9 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
THE CRIMSON PALM is an early Shaw Brothers outing, a musical slice of Chinese opera with all of the singing and melodramatic characterisation that you know from the era. Very little of interest happens here - at least for this fan of Shaw's later full-blooded martial arts epics - but it looks handsome, if a little stilted, and the costumes are superb. Ivy Ling Po and Ching Lee star.
