While Disney was drawing dancing daisies, Lantz was doing something more important: helping define our postwar identity. These things aren't so interesting to watch today except in the historical context. Take a look at Woody compared to, say Bogie.
The post-war American male was energetic, interested in girls, irreverent, and not afraid to be annoying. At least a certain ideal kind of American, the kind Steve McQueen portrayed.
I'm particularly interested in the role Woody played in setting expectations for women redheads in film after , say, 1952.
