could use more retractable testicles, but still classic
12 July 2013 | by See all my reviews

There are pretty much only two colors in this movie: green and blue. It's very, very emblematic of a certain vibe in a certain period in a certain genre, perhaps even more than The Secret Rivals and Born Invincible. Revenge, stolen manuscripts; white wigs; stolen funk and orchestral samples that somehow seem like they were specifically made for the film (even though they cut off at hilariously amateurish times); a bad guy who's only identifiable by a certain scar (even though it's obvious who he is); "THE END" five seconds after the final fight; the kind of scenery people praise up & down when it's in a critically acclaimed film like Ran; a training scene that's referred to in the climax in a way that makes your brain go "ooohhh..." 7 Grandmasters is a certified bingo sheet of kung- fu movie clichés, but there's something so endearing and special about it, "cliche" seems like too harsh of a word.

While the choreography's not quite as squeaky clean as Yuen Woo-ping's, there's nevertheless some real panache involved, unlike most low budget indies. It's a nice mix of straight-up open hand sparring, shapes and weapons, all with surprising force and agility (and it's easy to overlook a few dodgy bits because in the context of the story, the characters usually aren't trying to kill each other). And while Kuo's tendency to abuse cuts doesn't really bother me in his other movies, he's thankfully pretty conservative with the knife in this one. As for the anti-physics bits where characters do strange things while ostensibly hovering stationary in the air, whether one thinks it's stupid or hilarious and charming separates the weak from the strong.

Whether or not something like this is "generic" is a bunch of loaded semantic silliness. It's like Motorhead: you know what you're getting, and it does what it does better than almost anything else.
