Sposi (1987),movie of a pellucid,beneficial and cooling bitterness, expressing resignation,aloofness and amusement,develops some perennial themes,such as the couple relations,the decisions in life,the steps taken,etc.,and is a weaving of several tales:a rich and ugly man (Carlo Delle Piane) and his young,cunning mistress who goads,pushes him to leave rapidly his wife (1);a beautiful and vulgar girl,her fat,dull fiancé,and his belly worm lover ,both men being bald and lubberly (this trio is the provincial pole of the narration) (2);a grown-up, languorous ,sad and disappointed woman,who lives on a yacht with the tippler that is now her husband,and who meets suddenly her bald, dark, big frog ex-husband (3);a failing,lazy TV male star that needs a wife so that he may relaunch his ruined career;and fate brings at his door the down hearted but appealing victim of a rape (so,herself a notorious person),Delia Boccardo,and he plans to use her,to benefit from her miserable notoriety (4);a dawdler who checks tickets in a theater hall ,and is unwilling to marry the nice and a little older woman ,his mate,the cashier of the theater.The woman is forced to plot a strategy to compel him towards marriage.She is skillful,he is a lout,and their story resembles a Decameron highly seasoned episode.

Pupi Avati is a distanced,objective,impartial observer,and his realism is simultaneously imperious,weightless and immediate.In literature,such a sharp,piercing realism is illustrated by a Kohlhaase.
Excepting the skillful knitting of several narrations,in a coral,Sposi (1987) belongs to the austere European realism,together with Maurice Pialat's À Nos Amours (1983),La Flambeuse (1981),Mario Monicelli's Caro Michele (1976) (except Monicelli's sarcastic fancy).
