Andrew Pulver on Margin Call

Debutant director Jc Chandor attempts to inject a little humanity into Hollywood's latest Wall Street crash thriller

A not-unentertaining excavation of the recent stock market crash on Wall Street, as seen from the point of view of an investment bank that sees which way the wind is blowing and decides to trigger the whole meltdown. "It's not called panic if you're first out the door," as one character crisply observes.

Margin Call is constructed like a thriller but is one that plays out on an abstract, technical level – there's no drama of cover-up or corruption here.

A junior risk-management bod (Zachary Quinto) figures out that the firm is overexposed and may go belly up; cue a shuffling upwards of responsibility as ever more august company men try to get their heads around the situation. Set Visit Interview: Vin Diesel Talks Fast Five

28 January 2011 4:07 PM, PST | | See recent LRM Online news »

He may not have been in as many movies as other big name actors but Vin Diesel is still one of the biggest superstars in the world and one of the few action stars we've got left in this town. With him and Dwayne Johnson on set together, in the same film together, beating the crap out of each other, it's something action fans are going to enjoy seeing. We had a chance to sit and talk to Vin (sorry, we talked to Dom. He was still in character.) for a few minutes about Fast Five and what he puts into each one of his projects. Vin also talks about his avoidance of Twitter, how story is the most important thing for him in a film, what he got paid for his cameo in Tokyo Drift, how Fast Five is the 2nd film in a trilogy, where they'll go for the sixth film and more. »

Margin Call is a fine crash movie, but no banker

It boasts superb performances, but right now the 'normal' public may not want to go and see a film about the Us financial crisis

There's so much male energy coursing through Jc Chandor's promising financial crisis thriller Margin Call that by the end of it you'd be clamouring for an oestrogen bath, if such a thing were to exist. Drawing on the dialogue-laden energy of Boiler Room and Glengarry Glen Ross, the movie boasts a terrific performance by Kevin Spacey at the heart of an impressive ensemble.

I saw Margin Call at a packed press and industry screening on Friday but it will be more revealing to see what a "normal" audience makes of it all at Tuesday's world premiere, because financial crisis stories aren't exactly the kind of thing the paying public is going to run to see at the end of the week. Remember that spate of war »
