Good for a made-for-TV movie
29 May 1999 | by See all my reviews

A based-on-true-story account of black sailors during World War II and an explosion at Port Chicago directly traceable to the Navy's segregationist beliefs. (The Navy was big on white supremacy during World War Two.) Michael Jai White does an excellent job as Ben Cooper, a somewhat naive sailor involved in the accused mutiny in Port Chicago. This story is important enough to be put into a documentary (to take a hint from the other commentor), or even a full-scale movie, but instead was an easily-dismissed made-for-TV flick. That aside, this is a good movie, and worth the time should it be shown again or if NBC releases it on video. However, the commercial interruptions and some minor problems with the acting cause problems here and there.
